Don Hansen's Football Gazette tabs Anderson and Ellison All-Region

WINONA, Minn. - Bemidji State University linebacker Jake Anderson (Sr., Karlstad, Minn.) and cornerback Tiger Ellison (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) have been named to the All-Super Region Three Team by Don Hansen's Football Gazette. Anderson earned a spot on the First Team, while Ellison was selected Third Team.

The BSU duo stood as two of 25 players hailing from Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference institutions to earn all region honors, led by five picks from Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Anderson, a First-Team All-NSIC pick and Preseason NSIC Player to Watch, was again a force for the Beavers’ “Gang Green” defense in 2009. He finished second on the team with 69 tackles (22 solo), posted a team-best 15.0 tackles for loss and led the league with 10.5 quarterback sacks on a defensive unit that capped the regular season ranked 15th in the country allowing just 276 yards per game and a meager 81 rushing yards per contest to rank ninth.

Anderson finished his career ranked fourth on BSU tackles for loss list (39.5) and eighth in quarterback sacks (16.5), while his 10.5 this fall stand third on BSU’s single-season sacks chart.

At the conclusion of the season, Anderson was also picked to represent the Beavers on the Daktronics Inc. All-Super Region Three Team and went on to become became the 18th player in BSU football history to be selected All-America, garnering second team honors.

Despite playing just seven games due to injury, Ellison totaled 29 tackles (14 solo), led the team with three interceptions and was second on the team with four passes broken up. In addition, he forced a fumble.

Ellison capped his four-year career as a First Team All-NSIC selection. The Columbus, ohio native posted 125 tackles (73 solo), six interceptions and nine passes broken up in 28 games over four years for the Beavers. In addition to his duties in the BSU secondary, Ellison also served as one of Bemidji State top return threats during his career.

The first and second team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2009 Division II Football Gazette All-America team will be named.

A total of 19 players were repeat selections, while the final totals showed that 81 players selected from 25 teams earned some form of Football Gazette All-Super Region Three honor.

Bemidji State finished the 2009 campaign with an 8-3 overall record and a 7-3 mark in league play. With eight wins, BSU has now posted eight or more wins five times since head coach Jeff Tesch took the reigns of the program 14 years ago. In the 70 years prior to his arrival, Bemidji State recorded just one eight-win campaign.

Tesch returns 11 starters on the offensive side of the ball, which includes First-Team All-NSIC quarterback Derek Edholm (Jr., Anoka, Minn.) and eight starters on a defense led by Jordan Lardinois (Jr., DE, New Franken, Wis.) a First-Team All-NSIC defensive lineman.
