Matt Cain finished his second season as an assistant coach with the Bemidji State football program in 2016. He is responsible for coaching the defensive line. Prior to coming to Bemidji State, Cain spent the last five years from 2011-2015 as a part of his alma mater, Carroll University's football coaching staff. He was the defensive ends coach for the Pioneers.

In 2017 Bemidji State's defensive front provided a spark for the "Gang Green" in Cain's third season while finishing the season second in the conference with 34 sacks. As a unit, the defense was ranked fifth in the confrence with an average of 299.3 yards allowed per game with only 4.1 yards per play. The "Gang Green" defense ranked fifth in the NSIC in rushing defense with 104.9 yards allowed per game. Two Beavers defensive linemen were selected to the 2017 All-NSIC team, including senior defensive end Alex Burgess to the second team and senior defensive end Jake Wirsching to the honorable mention team. 

In 2016 the Gang Gree defense ranked fifth in the NSIC allowing 394 yards per game but just 4.9 yards per play on their way to a record 9 total wins and the program's first post season win in the Mineral Water Bowl.  They also ranked fifth in the conference with 33 sacks and Defensive Lineman Alex Burgess was selected to the All-NSIC First Team Defense while Lineman Jake Wirsching was name to the All-NSIC Second Team Defense.  

The Beavers defense only allowed 19.1 points per game in 2015, which was third least in the conference. The defense also ranked third in total defense by having the third best rush defense and seventh best pass defense. The rush defense only allowed an average of 113.8 yards per game while the pass defense only allowed 234.7 yards per game. The Gang Green defense also recorded 30 sacks and 15 interceptions, both ranked in the top ten in the conference. The defensive line had Mario Stephens named Second Team All-NSIC while Chris Ostby and Jake Wirsching were named All-NSIC Honorable Mentions. Mitchell Elbe added another award to the defensive line when he was named to the 2015 Fall Academic All-NSIC Team.

During his time at Carroll, Cain coached six individuals to all-conference honors, one All-American, the 2012 Midwest Conference Player of the Year and assisted the 2012 Division III third ranked defense in the nation. He also coached Carroll's career sack leader. 

Cain was a three-year player for Carroll University from 2008-2010, where he played wide receiver and h-back for the Pioneers and was an All-Midwest Conference selection following his sophomore season. He totaled 114 career catches during his career. 

A Pecatonica, Illinois native, Cain earned a bachelor's degree in history in 2011 and a master's of adult and continuing education in 2013, both of which are from Carroll. He is now pursuing his MBA at Bemidji State.
