Minneapolis, Minn. - In helping Bemidji State (14-11, 10-6 NSIC) to a weekend sweep at home of league-leader Northern State and UM-Morris, junior forward Charles Hanks (Chicago, Ill.) was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week for Feb. 17th.

Hanks nailed the game-winner with just :09 seconds remaining to lead the Beavers to a 69-68 upset win over 2002-03 NSIC Regular Season Champion Northern State Friday. Hanks heroics gave BSU its first season sweep of the Wolves since the 1993-94 season. He scored a game-high 23 points on 10-of-19 (.526) shooting while chipping in with two rebounds, a block, a steal and an assist. That scoring effort capped a three-game stretch of 20 or more and five out of his last six - he has averaged 24.5 points in those six games. In Saturday’s 118-70 blowout win over Minnesota-Morris, Hanks extended his double-digit scoring effort to 16 consecutive games as he netted 12 points on an efficient 5-for-7 (.714) from the field in only 11 minutes of action. The 118 points was second in school history behind the 126 against Northland (WI), Dec. 13, 1991.

For the weekend, he was 15-of-26 (.577) from the field, two of four (.500) from behind the three-point arc and three-for-five (.600) from the foul line while recording 35 points (17.5 ppg), five rebounds (2.5 rpg), one block and two steals.

Hanks has led the squad 12 times in rebounding, including five of the last seven games, and 10 times in scoring. He is tops on the team in points (17.1), rebounding (6.9), field goal percentage (.531 - 179/337), blocks (17) and made field goals (179), fourth in total steals (25) and fifth in total assists (42) and three-point percentage (.343). The Beavers are 15-6 when Hanks notches 20+ points in his career.

In conference games, he has stepped up his offensive output scoring 19.4 per game, which is third-best in the NSIC, and shooting 55.0 percent (126/228) from the field. He went for his ninth career double-double with 27 points and 11 caroms against UM-Duluth (2/15/03) to cap a five-game stint in which he went for four double-doubles. The 2001-02 NSIC Newcomer of the Year currently is riding a 16-game double-digit scoring streak and has gone over the 20-point barrier 10 times this season.

Hanks shares this award with senior guard Jared Bledsoe from MSU Moorhead.

The Beavers enter their final weekend of the regular season tied for third with Wayne State (NE), Winona State and UM-Duluth in the league standings. BSU visits Concordia-St. Paul and Winona State this weekend with tip-off at 7:30 p.m. The top-four conference teams host the first-round on Wednesday, March 5th.
