BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State men’s basketball team remained at No. 7 in the North Central Region poll, announced today by the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Committee. BSU has now been in the regional polls for four straight weeks, just the second year that they have been recognized with this honor. The No. 7 ranking is the best in school history; BSU got to as high as No. 8 during the 1992-93 season.

Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season champions for the first time since 1966-67, the Beavers remained hot by downing Minnesota Duluth, 86-76 last Thursday in the regular season finale. Standing 14-2 in the last 16 contests, BSU has been especially impressive at home going 9-1 including a school-best 8-0 through league play.

There are ten teams selected in each region with a total of eight regions in the country. The regional rankings are released weekly on Wednesdays through March 3, 2004. The North Central Region comprise 32 teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), North Central Conference (NCC) and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). The RMAC is made up of teams from Nebraska, Colorado and New Mexico.

The winner of the NSIC Tournament automatically qualifies for the North Central Region NCAA Tournament, March 13-14, 16, held at the top seed in the region. The current No. 1 team in the region is Metro State in Denver, Colo. For those who do not win the conference tourney, at-large teams for regional play will be decided late Sunday night.

Bemidji State joins Northern State (fifth) as the only NSIC teams in the poll. The Beavers have faced three of the region’s current top 10 programs this season - South Dakota State (fourth), Northern State and South Dakota (sixth). BSU has split with Northern State, defeating the Wolves, 94-83, Jan. 6, 2004.
