BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University men’s basketball junior guard James Roberson (Chicago, Ill.) has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, announced by BSU officials today. Roberson, who won 2003-04 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year honors, will likely undergo surgery to remove the tumor sometime next week. MRI exams revealed the tumor earlier this week.

“ James has overcome a lot of odds to get to college,” said head coach Jeff Guiot. “He is an inner city kid from Chicago who has made the right decisions in life. He is the first from his family to go to college.

“He has a great attitude and is going to do a lot with his life. I have not met a person that has not loved the kid. There is truly something special about James. I ask that you pray for him and any financial support would be greatly appreciated.”

James and his family is scheduled to meet with doctors on Monday (March 29) to discuss the severity of his ailment. The tumor is thought to be benign.

Roberson was the point man for a BSU offense that ranked 18th in the country with 84.5 points per game. Individually, Roberson ranked 24th in NCAA Division II in assists per game with 5.8. He holds the school record for season assists (167) and the BSU single-game high of 13 accomplished versus Concordia-St. Paul, Jan. 2, 2004. He averaged 11.1 points per contest, good for fourth on the team and was second with 54 treys. Roberson played two seasons at Lincoln Community College in Illinois before his arrival at BSU in 2003-04.

“Roberson is a part of our athletic family,” said director of athletics Dr. Rick Goeb. “The character and personality of this young man will be remembered by all who were in contact with him.

“He is a very successful individual on the basketball court and I know he will be such in whatever endeavors he faces in the future. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
