Pairings are Set for First Rounds of Men’s and Women’s 2005 NSIC Red Baron Classic
Monday, February 28, 2005

St. Paul, Minn. – Just hours after the final horn sounded on the 2004-05 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season game, the conference office was busy comparing records and punching the numbers and now has announced the seeds, pairings and sites for the first round of the men’s and women’s 2005 NSIC Red Baron Classic Basketball Tournament.

The Bemidji State University men’s team (16-11; 10-4 NSIC) finished the 2004-05 regular season with a record of 10-4 and was seeded No.2. BSU will host a first round game versus the University of Minnesota-Crookston (7-20; 3-11 NSIC) Wednesday, March 2 at 7:00 p.m. A BSU win in the first round would advance the team to the semifinal round where it would play the winner of the No. 3 Northern State University / No. 6 Southwest Minnesota State University game at 2:00 p.m. with the site to be determined.

If top seed Winona State University wins its opening round game versus No. 8 Minnesota State University-Moorhead, the semifinal and championship rounds will be hosted by WSU at the McCown Center. If the Warriors would drop its first round game and the Beavers win theirs, then the final two rounds of the tournament would take place in the BSU Gymnasium.

A win over Winona State in the final week of the regular season was enough to get the BSU women’s team (5-22; 1-13 NSIC) out of last place and into the No. 7 seed in the tournament. Its draw in the first round is No. 2 Concordia University-St. Paul (20-7; 10-4 NSIC). Since the Golden Bears are the higher seed, the Beavers will turn around and head back the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minn. to play CSP for the second time in five days. The opening tip is set for 7:00 p.m.

On the men’s side of things, Winona State wrapped up the regular season title and the No. 1 seed with an NSIC record of 12-2 while the women’s crown was garnered by MSU-Moorhead which went 12-2 in league play.

The NSIC Tournament semifinal and championship rounds are vacating the Gangelhoff Center and the campus of Concordia University-St. Paul for the first time in the event’s history. The final two rounds of this season’s tournament will now be hosted by the highest remaining seed on the men’s and women’s sides after the first round has been played out. This also means that for the first time in the six-year history of the tournament there is a distinct possibility that the men’s and women’s tournaments will be played at different venues.

The 2005 NSIC tournament champions receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament’s North Central Regional Tournament on both the men’s and women’s side. The regional will be hosted by the No. 1 seed.
