BSU downed 79-56 by UND

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University men’s basketball team kept the game close early but a 17-2 run in the first half by the University of North Dakota put the Beavers in a hole they couldn’t get out of. The Fighting Sioux went on to take a 79-56 nonconference victory in over BSU.

After BSU took the lead on the opening tip with a jump-hook in the lane by Alex Smith, the Sioux scored on two straight possessions and never trailed again.

The Beavers, down 15-5 in the early going, went on a 9-3 run with a three-pointer from Arron Evans (Jr., G, Minneapolis, Minn.) and six straight made free throws. The Sioux answered with their 17-2 run and put the game at 37-20 heading into half after Arron Evans beat the buzzer with a jump shot.

BSU’s Marques Ramos (Jr., F, Henderson, Nev.) and Smith helped keep the Beavers within striking distance in the second half, scoring nine and seven points, respectively, in the second frame. Ramos ended the game with a team-high 17 points and Smith ended with 11 and a team-high six rebounds.

Evans and Dan Sowu (Sr., G, Chicago, Ill.) also scored in double digits for the Beavers with 12 and 10 points. Evans also had seven assists, five rebounds, and three steals to complete his all-around effort.

The balanced scoring for the Sioux was led by Ervin Youmans with 19 points and Harry Boyce with 14 including a perfect 6-of-6 shooting night. Youmans connected on 3-of-4 attempts from three-point land.

The Sioux made 31-of-52 (.596) shots, including 38 points in the paint from their post players to help keep the pressure on the Beaver offense all night.

BSU’s offense made just 16 of 53 (.302) and was outrebounded 37-27.

Bemidji State’s (0-12) losing streak reached 12 games with the loss, while UND improved their record to 8-5 on the season.

Notes: Bemidji State had 12 offensive rebounds compared to just seven for UND... Three technical fouls were called in the game... Each team had four double digit scorers... UND outscored BSU 38-10 in the paint and 12-6 on the fastbreak. BSU outscored UND 11-10 on second chance points and 33-20 in points off the bench.
