‘Open Hearts for Haiti’ event at men’s basketball Tuesday
BEMIDJI, Minn.  -- The Bemidji State University men’s basketball team will host an ‘Open Hearts for Haiti’ event Tuesday for its nonconference game against Finlandia University, which begins at 7 p.m. Anyone who contributes a new or gently used article of clothing will earn free admission to the game.

In addition, each student who participates will be given a ticket for each item donated and entered into a drawing for a $100 gift certificate to the on-campus Barnes and Noble bookstore, donated by the BSU men’s basketball program.

The basketball team will also wear special t-shirts supporting the Haiti effort during warm-ups. The team will again wear the t-shirts for its final home game, Feb. 20, and then the shirts will be auctioned off during the game with all proceeds going to the “Open Hearts” project.

Donations will also be accepted at the game and representatives from the Bemidji State’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Physical Education, Exercise Science, Heath and Sport (PEHS) club will be collecting monetary contributions and new or gently used items for men, women and children.

Open Hearts for Haiti is an initiative to collect much-needed items for the victims of the recent natural disaster. All items collected will be packaged and will accompany BSU senior Corinne Milien and a few others from the BSU Athletic Department to Haiti in May.

The Beavers host Winona State University Feb. 20 for their final home game of the season. That game will serve as fan appreciation day and senior day for Seth Haake.

Bemidji State University, located in Bemidji, Minn., is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
