Rongstad named NSIC Player of the Week
ST. PAUL, Minn.  -- Bemidji State University men’s basketball freshman guard/forward Lance Rongstad (G/F, Eleva, Wis.) has been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week by the league office today. The award is the first of his career and the first for BSU this season. According to Bemidji State records dating to 1998-99, Rongstad is the first freshman to earn the league honor.

Rongstad scored a career-high 29 points in a 88-86 victory against Winona State University Saturday, guiding the Beavers to a season-sweep of the Warriors for the first time since the 2003-04 season. In the game he shot 7-of-12 from the field, 2-of-4 from beyond the arc and 13-of-15 from the free throw line, establishing career-highs in both free throws made and attempted. In the game’s final 2:31, Rongstad hit 10-of-12 free throws, had a steal and an offensive rebound off a missed free throw to keep the ball on BSU’s end when the score was 87-85 and only four seconds on the clock. He added seven rebounds and two blocks, playing in 37 minutes in the game. Both blocks came within two minutes of each other in the second half. Both were 3-point attempts that would have given the Warriors a lead or cut the deficit to two points.

BSU went 2-0 on the week as they hosted Finlandia University in a nonconference game, winning by the score of 99-67. For the week, Rongstad averaged 28.5 minutes, 20.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. He shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from beyond the arc and 88.2 percent from the charity stripe. BSU is on a four-game winning streak. During that streak, Rongstad is averaging 20.3 points and 6.0 rebounds, shooting 52.2 percent.

This season, Rongstad is second on the team in points per game with 12.4. He is third in rebounds per game at a 4.4 clip. In conference play, he is averaging 14.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. His scoring average is 14th in the NSIC and first among freshmen. The rebound average is 20th, sixth among freshmen. His 29.0 minutes per conference game is third on the team, 22nd in the conference and second among freshmen.

The Beavers (11-14, 7-11 NSIC) finish the regular season Feb. 24 at University of Minnesota Duluth (8 p.m.) and Feb. 27 at Wayne State College (6 p.m.).
