Montgomery hired as assistant coach
BEMIDJI, Minn.  -- Bemidji State head men’s basketball coach Matt Bowen has announced the hiring of Ryan Montgomery as the new assistant basketball coach. Montgomery moves into the position after serving two seasons as the graduate assistant coach at BSU. He replaces Jeremy Tiers who was Bowen’s original assistant, serving for the past four years.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to remain at Bemidji State,” Montgomery said. “I’m honored Matt wanted me back; there isn’t a better guy to work under. I learned a lot under Jeremy and I thank him for that. We have a good bunch of guys and I want to take what we have been building over the past few seasons and take it a step higher.”

As a graduate assistant, Montgomery’s primary duties included team travel, film exchange, recruiting assistant, scouting, academics and weight training. Now as the assistant, his roles become a little more administrative, working as the basketball camps director and heading the Beaver Buddies program. He is now the recruiting coordinator, handles admissions and scouting and helps oversee the graduate and student assistants, while his duties on the court remain relatively the same.

At Hamline University (St. Paul, Minn.), Montgomery lettered four years in basketball and one year in track and field. During Montgomery’s senior season he helped lead Hamline to its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season performance in 12 years and its first playoff win in 21 years. Montgomery spent the 2007 season as an assistant coach at Plainview-Elgin-Millville High School.

Montgomery graduated from Plainview High School in 2002 and graduated with an exercise sport science degree from Hamline in 2007. He plans to complete his graduate degree in sports studies from BSU in December.

The 2009-10 Beavers closed the season winning five of their last six games, which included a season-long five game winning streak. BSU finished with a 12-15 overall and 8-12 NSIC record. The win totals are the best under Bowen and since 2005-06. BSU finished in 11th place in the final NSIC standings, but just a game out of a tie for ninth.

Bemidji State University, located in Bemidji, Minn., is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
