The Game
The Bemidji State University men’s basketball team (1-1; 0-0 NSIC) completes its nonconference schedule in Michigan Nov. 20-21 at Michigan Tech University and Finlandia University, respectfully. The contest against Michigan Tech is set for a 6 p.m. (central) start and the game at Finlandia is set for 4 p.m. (central).

The Beavers
The Bemidji State University men’s basketball team began the 2012-13 season at the NSIC/RMAC Challenge Nov. 16-17 in Winona, Minn. and posted a 1-1 record with a season-opening 76-49 victory against University of Colorado-Colorado Springs before falling to No. 5 Metro State University 67-41. Junior Zach Noreen scored a career-high 16 points to guide four players in double digit scoring in Friday’s win and his 4-for-5 performance from beyond the arc lifted the Beavers to a 10-for-18 (55.6%) evening from 3-point land. The games not only started a new year for BSU, but a new era in program history with the debut of head coach Mike Boschee, who was hired as Bemidji State’s 16th head coach in July.

Head Coach Mike Boschee
Mike Boschee
was named the 16th head coach of the Bemidji State University men’s basketball program July 11, 2012. Boschee, a 22-year veteran in the coaching profession, last served as the head coach at Central College in Pella, Iowa. Boschee completed his ninth season as head coach at Central College in 2011-12. Producing a .500 record or better in four of the past five seasons, he compiled a 115-115 career record at Central (third all-time in wins) after inheriting a program that failed to reach .500 in the eight seasons previous to Boschee stepping on campus. Prior to his time at Central College, Boschee served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. from 1993-2003. He earned a master’s degree from Northern State University in 1993 and also served as a graduate assistant coach. He graduated from University of North Dakota in 1991 with a degree in recreation management after a successful four-year playing career.

The Huskies: The Huskies are 1-1 after splitting a weekend in Minnesota battling Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference teams. MTU traveled to Southwest Minnesota State Nov. 15 and defeated the Mustangs 75-67 behind GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year Ali Haidar’s 32 points and 14 rebounds. Nov. 17, Michigan Tech headed to Minnesota Duluth and fell 70-58 after shooting just 38.6 percent from the field and allowing UMD to go 10-for-20 (50%) from beyond the arc. Haidar scored 22 points in the loss and leads the team with 27.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Head coach Kevin Luke is in his 19th season leading the Huskies. The four-time GLIAC Coach of Year has posted a 317-202 record as head coach.

All-Time Series vs the Huskies: The Beavers snapped a six-game losing streak against the Huskies last season with a 63-58 victory at the BSU Gymnasium. MTU has a 7-3 advantage in the past 10 games, but the Beavers own the all-time series versus the former Northern Intercollegiate Conference-foe 37-17. At Michigan Tech, BSU is 13-12 all-time.

The Lions: The Lions are 0-2 this season with losses to University of Minnesota, Crookston, 81-75 and Northern Michigan University, 129-52. The team also fell to Michigan Tech 117-53 in an exhibition contest Nov. 7. Jon Moore posted 17 points, five rebounds, four steals, four blocks and four assists in the loss to UMC and 10 points with three steals against Northern Michigan. Terry Smith is in his second season as head coach at Finlandia.

All-Time Series vs the Lions: The Beavers have played the Lions twice in the last three years and own a 4-0 all-time record against Finlandia. The last contest came Nov. 17, 2010 in Hancock, Mich. with BSU winning 84-63. The Beavers are 2-0 on the road against the Lions.
