BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Taylor Sautbine (Sr., Cloquet, Minn.) and Mason Walters (F, 6-7, 225, Sr., Milton, Wis.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Dec. 3-9.
Sautbine, a senior on the BSU indoor track and field team, recorded a pair of third place finishes and anchored the Bemidji State 4x200-meter relay team to victory Saturday at the College of St. Scholastica's Opener. The BSU senior was the top NSIC finisher in the 60-meter dash, logging a personal-best time of 8.01. She was also third to cross the finish line in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.45. In the 4x200-meter relay, she ran the last leg of a BSU quartet that took the event title in a time of 1:52.55 to edge University of Minnesota Duluth by .19 of a second.
The senior’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks her first of the season and the first for the BSU track and field team in 2012-13. Sautbine has been recognized as Beaver Pride’s athlete of the week on three other occasions (May 5, 2010, May 11, 2011 and April 25, 2012)
Walters posted back-to-back double-doubles in a 1-1 NSIC road weekend Dec. 7-8 at No. 14 St. Cloud State (L, 68-60) and Minnesota Duluth (W, 66-55). He averaged 15.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 54.5 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from beyond the arc and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. He added a steal and an assist with just two turnovers in 28.5 minutes per game. The senior scored 17 points and tied a career-high 11 rebounds with 70 percent shooting from the field at SCSU before 14 points and 10 rebounds in the win against UMD. The double-doubles were his second and third of his career.
This week’s award stands as the second of Walters’ career, while it is the third of the season for a member of the BSU men’s basketball team. Walters follows Zach Noreen (Fr., 6-6, Jr., Avon, Minn.), who is a two-time recipient in 2012-13 (Nov. 21 and Dec. 5).
The BSU men’s basketball team returns home to host University of Mary and Minot State University Dec. 14-15 at the BSU Gymnasium to wrap-up the 2012 calendar year before taking a break for the holidays.
The Bemidji State track and field team now breaks for the holidays. The Beavers return to action Jan. 12 at 3 p.m. when they host BSU's annual Alumni Meet at Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center.
