Green continues scoring streak as Beavers fall to Peacocks, 80-61

FAYETTE, Iowa (Dorman Gymnasium) -- Freshman guard Jai’Vionne Green continued to lead the Bemidji State University men’s basketball team in scoring Friday night, but a 17-point output was not enough as Upper Iowa University beat BSU, 80-61. Green led the Beavers (3-8, 1-5 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) in scoring for the seventh time this season and the third game in a row against the Peacocks (9-4, 6-1 NSIC) at Dorman Gymnasium in Fayette, Iowa.

Green was the only Beaver in double-digit scoring while Bemidji State shot 40.4 percent (23-57) as a team. Despite reaching 40 rebounds or more for the third game this season, the Beavers gave away 24 turnovers that led to 25 points for the Peacocks.

The Beavers and Peacocks were statistically even in several categories during the first half, but it was turnovers and points off of that helped UIU to a first half lead. Bemidji State held a 7-3 margin two and a half minutes into play. BSU gave away its first of 13 first-half turnovers following its first seven points of the game. Upper Iowa went on a 21-4 run over the next 12 minutes of action and pulled away to a first-half-high 17-point lead, 36-19, with 2:15 in the half.

Both teams improved their shooting efforts in the second half, but the game again came down to turnovers. The Beavers gave away 11 second-half turnovers while the Peacocks forced four steals. Upper Iowa ran away to a game-high lead of 26 points, 73-47, with 5:41 left in the game.

Bemidji State plays a New Year’s Eve game at Winona State University tomorrow in Winona, Minn. The Beavers and Warriors follow the women’s game with a scheduled start time of 6 p.m.
