BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- Three selections of Bemidji State University men’s basketball student-athletes tied a season-high under head coach Mike Boschee as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference released its all-conference teams Thursday. Junior Derek Thompson was named to the All-NSIC Second Team while senior Ja Morgan and junior Nick Wagner earned a spot on the All-NSIC Honorable Mention list.
Thompson, a forward from Cold Spring, Minn., leads the Beavers and ranks sixth in the conference shooting 51.2 percent from the field. He has totaled 382 points and averages 6.4 rebounds per game, which both rank second for the Beavers. Thompson has recorded six games with at least 20 points with five double-doubles this season. He also became the 19th student-athlete in program history to record 1,000 career points after scoring nine during the opening round of the NSIC Tournament Wednesday at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Morgan, a guard from Las Vegas, Nev., saw his senior season shortened due to injury but still leads BSU with 23 steals and ranks 15th in the conference with 84 assists. He also ranks second among the Beavers with 14.4 points per game. Of his 15 games played this season, Morgan scored at least 20 points on five occasions and recorded double-digit assists twice. He led the NSIC in assists per game before a hand injury kept him out of 12 games.
Wagner, a guard from Galesville, Wis., is BSU’s leading scorer with 397 total points and 14.7 points per game, the latter of which ranks 16th in the NSIC. He ranks second in the NSIC and 43rd in the nation shooting 41.7 percent from beyond the arc and broke the BSU program single-season record with 80 3-pointers made this season after sinking two 3-pointers during the opening round of the NSIC Tournament on Wednesday.
BSU’s three selections to the all-conference team tie a single-season high since Boschee took over the program during the 2012-13 season. The Beavers also earned three selections to the squad following the 2013-14 season.
Minnesota Duluth senior forward Brandon Myer took home NSIC Player of the Year, Northern State University sophomore forward Parker Fox earned NSIC Defensive Player of the Year, Minnesota State forward Ryland Holt was selected as the NSIC Freshman of the Year and University of Sioux Falls head coach Chris Johnson was named NSIC Coach of the Year.
