Ryan Montgomery served his eighth season as a member of the Bemidji State men's basketball coaching staff in 2015-16, while it stood as his fourth season as an assistant coach under head coach Mike Boschee.
Prior to being hired by Boschee in September 2012, he served as an assistant at BSU from 2010-12 and as a graduate assistant from 2008-10.
Montgomery is active in all phases of the program with a specialization in recruiting, individual player development, game preparation, team travel, academic progress and camp coordinator and instructor.
Since Montgomery was hired as an assistant coach in 2010, the Beavers are 87-81. In that same time span eight student-athletes have been named All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, which includes two NSIC Newcomers of the Year and one NSIC Player of the Year, three have earned all-region honors and one player, James Ellisor, was named All-American by three different publications, which inlucded the Ron Lenz National Player of the Year honor by Daktronics, Inc.
The 2015-16 Beavers concluded the season with a 10-17 overall record and a 7-15 conference record. They posted a winning home record by going 8-7 at the friendly confines of the Bemidji State Gymnasium. Senior guard DJ Anderson averaged 4.9 assists per game which was the fourth highest average in the conference.
In 2013-14, the Beavers matched their 2012-13 wins total of 18 with an 18-9 record, which ranks tied for fifth, in program history. Bemidji State posted a 15-7 league record in 2013-14 for a share of the NSIC North title and hosted its third-consecutive NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament first round game. After an 18-12 overall record and 13-9 NSIC mark in 2012-13, BSU made a run to the program's first appearance in the NSIC Tournament Championship contest.
In 2011-12, Montgomery helped guide the Beavers to a program-best 22-9 record and the second all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament. BSU also claimed its second NSIC Regular Season Championship in nine years.
Montgomery has been involved in the tutelage of highly praised players within the Beaver program in: James Ellisor (2011-12 NCAA Division II National Player of the Year/Professional), Dermaine Crockrell (2011-12 NSIC Newcomer of the Year; 2012-13 NSIC All-Conference), Bryce Tesdahl (2011-12 All Region; 2011-12 NSIC All-Conference), Mason Walters (2012-13 All-NSIC Tournament/Professional), and Lance Rongstad (2012-13 NSIC All-Conference).
Prior to BSU, Montgomery spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach at Plainview-Elgin-Millville High School. He played college basketball at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. During Montgomery's senior season, he helped lead Hamline to its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) post-season win and semi-finals appearance in 12 years.
In addition, Montgomery has been involved in over 100 player development camps in his career.
Montgomery graduated with an exercise sport science degree from Hamline in 2006. He completed his graduate degree in sports studies from BSU in 2012.
Montgomery and his wife Trista reside in Bemidji, Minn.
