4/30/2010 - MEN'S GOLF Bemidji State trio lands 2009-10 NSIC men’s golf honors

ST. PAUL, Minn.  --  Three members of the Bemidji State University men’s golf team have been selected for 2009-10 All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) honors.  League officials today announced that Chris Curb (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) has been named First-Team All-NSIC, while teammates Jim Foss (Jr., Roseau, Minn.) and Jesse Nelson (Sr., Pine River, Minn.) garnered honorable mention honors in a vote by NSIC men’s golf coaches.

Curb, a freshman at BSU, was the only underclassman to earn a first-team award.  During the 2009-10 season, he posted eight top 10 finishes, which included medallist honors at the Concordia Open and WSU Spring Invitational. His scoring average of 73.5 over 20 rounds, not only led the team, it also paced all league golfers.  In addition, he helped the Beavers to a second-place finish at the 2009-10 NSIC Championships finishing fifth with a five-round total of 73-76-69-74-76--368 (+11) to earn a spot on the 2010 NSIC All-Tournament Team.  The freshman garnered NSIC Golfer of  the Week laurels Sept. 15, 2009 after capturing medallist honors at the Concordia Invitational (Sept. 11-12) carding a 68-69--137 (-7) and registering a 70-71--141 (-3) to finish fourth at the BSU Invitational (Sept. 13-14), leading Bemidji State to team titles in both events.  

Foss wrapped up the 2009-10 regular season golfing 20 rounds with a 74.2 scoring average. He finished among the top 10 golfers in five events, which included top five finishes on four occasions.  The Roseau, Minn. native finished tied for sixth at the NSIC Championships, winning the spring portion of the event with a six-under, 69-70-68--207.  

The award marks the second of its kind for Foss.  He also earned All-NSIC accolades following the 2007 campaign as a freshman.

Nelson earned 2009-10 All-NSIC Tournament honors after placing third at the championships with a 77-74-72-73-70--366 (+9).  His 74.5 average in 17 rounds was second on the team only to Curb. Finished among the top 10 individuals at six events this season, including a second-place finish at the BSU Invitational and third place at the aforementioned NSIC Championships.  A regular among BSU’s top five competing golfers, a foot injury ended the senior’s season and collegiate career prematurely.

In the same announcement, the NSIC also named Winona State University’s Brady Strangstalien as its 2009-10 Male Golfer of the Year and Geoff Klein, first-year head coach at Minnesota State University, as its coach of the year.
 
The Bemidji State men along with NSIC foes Minnesota State and St. Cloud State University now turn their focus to the 2010 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships.  The teams will travel to Palm Desert, Calif. May 3-5 where they will participate in the Central/West Super Regional.  The event is set for the Classic Club.
