5/6/2009 - MEN'S GOLF BSU's 2008-09 season comes to an end at Super Regional

LINCOLN, Neb. - (Wilderness Ridge Country Club) -- Despite a short delay due to the weather, the Bemidji State University men's golf team shaved 23 strokes off its round two score and Mitchell Mackedanz (Sr., Paynesville, Minn.) was one of eight participants to post sub-par final-round scores of the 2009 NCAA Division II Central/West Super Regional at Wilderness Ridge Country Club in Lincoln, Neb. Wednesday.

On the strength of Mackedanz's one-under-par 70, the Beavers posted 297 (+13) to finish the 54-hole event in 18th place with 313-320-297--930 (+74).

Jim Foss (So., Roseau, Minn.) carded a five-over-par 76 on day three to finish with 75-79-76--230 (+17) to tie for 55th place and pace the BSU contingent. He was followed by Jesse Nelson (Fr., Pine River, Minn.), who tied for 71st with a 80-83-70--233 (+20), Mackedanz in 80th with 75-82-77--234 (+21), Casey Hill (Fr., Virginia, Minn.) who registered a 83-80-74--237 (+24) to tie for 85th and Derek Harris (Sr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) who posted a 85-79-77--241 (+28) to round out the group tied for 97th.

Sonoma State, the leading team through the first two days of competition, carded a 297 (+13) in the final round and dropped back to third place. University of Colorado-Colorado Springs posted a 284 (E) to come roaring from 10 strokes back to take a three-stroke victory (289-290-284--863/+11). California State-Stanislaus settled into second place with 290-288-288--866 (+14).

Sonoma State’s Jarin Todd finished with 66-67-75--208 (-5) to take medallist honors.

The top five teams from the 20-team and top two individuals, not associated with a qualifying team, field will now advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships at Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, Wash., May 19-22.

Under head coach Don Niskanen, the Beavers close the book on another successful campaign. In addition to making their fifth post-season appearance in the last six years, the Beavers had three players earn NSIC Player of the Week honors, while Mackedanz and Nelson garnered all-conference accolades.
