MONTICELLO, Minn. - (Monticello Country Club) - Jesse Nelson (Fr., Pine River, Minn.) carded a 70 (-1) to lead the Bemidji State University men’s golf team to a second-place finish at the St. John’s Spring Invitational at the Monticello Country Club in Monticello, Minn. The one-day event originally scheduled for 36-holes, was cut to 18 holes due to cold and wet playing conditions. Nelson, who also tied for first in a dual at Missouri Western early this spring season, finished 18 holes under par (70) at the par 71, 65,43-yard course despite inclement weather. His 70 matched Alex Woodhill of Gustavus Adolphus for low tournament, but the BSU freshman lost medallist honors in the tie-breaker--based on scores on the final three holes. As a team, the Beavers finished the event at +19 with 303. That placed BSU 11 strokes off the lead in second place. St. John’s top team carded an 18-hole total of 292 to capture team honors. In addition to Nelson’s low round, Bemidji State also got a strong performance out of Aric Hansen. The Coleraine, Minn. native, who was participating in the event as individual representing BSU posted a 75 (+4) to finish the invitational tied for 12th place. The St. John’s Spring Invitational serves as the final regular-season competition for the Beaver men. May 4-5 the team is off to the 2009 NCAA Central/West Super Regional at Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb.
