BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Emily Kaus (Fr., C, 6-2, Eagan, Minn.) and Chris McKelvie (Sr., F, New Brighton, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after outstanding athletic performances during the week of Nov. 23-30.
Kaus averaged 7.0 points, 13.5 rebounds, 5.5 blocks and 2.0 assists in 25.5 minutes per game last weekend, guiding the BSU women’s basketball team to a 2-0 performance at the Grand Canyon Thanksgiving Tournament. In Friday’s game against Western State University (Colo.), Kaus posted 14 rebounds and seven blocks. Her rebound total set a team-high this season and her seven blocks established a new single-game record at BSU, previously set in the 1999-00 season. In Saturday’s contest versus Western New Mexico, Kaus totalled 10 points and 13 rebounds to record her first career double-double. She shot .500 from the field in the game, while adding four blocks to her league-leading 17 in 2009-10. Kaus started both games and finished the weekend shooting .375 from the field and going 2-3 from the line. Eleven of her 27 rebounds came off the offensive glass. Her immediate impact has helped BSU start 4-1 which is the best start by a BSU program since 1986-87.
A member of the BSU women’s basketball team captures Beaver Pride honors for the second consecutive week as Kaus’s first career honor follows Sydney Epema’s selection Nov. 25.
McKelvie led the Bemidji State men’s ice hockey team with a goal and an assist last weekend as the Beavers posted a 1-1 record in the in the Subway Holiday Classic. McKelvie contributed an assist early in the game Friday and netted his second game-winning goal of the season with just 3:19 left in regulation to down the top-ranked Miami University RedHawks. His two points in the victory stood as his second multi-point game of 2009-10. He finished the weekend with a +2 plus/minus rating.
The win marked the first time the BSU men’s hockey program has taken down the No. 1 team in the country.
McKelvie stands as the fifth BSU men’s ice hockey player to receive the award this season following Brad Hunt (So., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia), Matt Read (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ontario), Dan Bakala (So., G, Calgary, Ontario), and Jamie MacQueen (So., F, St. Thomas, Ontario). McKelvie was also selected as the College Hockey America Offensive Player of the Week earlier this week.
