WCHA tabs 11 Bemidji State players Scholar Athletes

MADISON, Wis. -- The Western Collegiate Hockey Association today announced 113 student-athletes as recipients of the league's ninth annual WCHA Scholar-Athlete Awards. Student-athletes from Bemidji State University comprised 11 of the league's 2013-14 contingent.

“On behalf of the entire Western Collegiate Hockey Association family, we offer heartfelt congratulations to all of our men’s and women’s WCHA Scholar-Athletes for 2013-14,” said Dr. Richard Davenport, Minnesota State University, Mankato President (Chair, Board of Directors), St. Cloud State University Faculty Representative Bill Hudson (Chair, women’s league), men’s Commissioner Bruce McLeod and women’s Commissioner Sara Martin in a joint statement. “Each year at this time, as our member teams are engaged in the heat of competition for championships and playoff positions, we have a special opportunity to publicly recognize the very best in our student-athletes.

“It is with a true sense of pride that we today acknowledge the tremendous time-commitment, effort and dedication put forth by these outstanding young men and women. Earning a WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award, and achieving this highest of scholastic honors among your peers, is a most fitting tribute. We wish each and every one of them all the success in the future.”

The prestigious WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award was developed through Association member Faculty Representatives and approved by the conference membership beginning with the 2005-06 season.

To earn recognition as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, conference-member student-athletes must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if his or her overall GPA is at least 3.50 for all terms at his or her present institution.

Over the first eight years of the award, there have now been 639 WCHA Scholar-Athlete honorees representing all 12 men’s-member and all eight women’s-member institutions. Fifty-four (54) of this season’s 114 men and women WCHA Scholar-Athletes are repeat honorees, including two four-time recipients and 21 three-time honorees.

Over the nine years of the award, there have now been more than 750 WCHA Scholar-Athlete honorees representing every men’s and women’s conference-member institutions. Thirty-seven (37) of this season’s 113 recipients are repeat honorees, with nine of those 37 now being three-time honorees.

BSU players recognized as 2012-13 WCHA Scholar Athletes are: Phil Brewer** (F, So., Cambridge, Ontario); Allie Duellman*** (D, Sr., Maplewood, Minn.); Tess Dusik (F, Sr., Oak Bluff, Manatoba); Alex Ehlert (D, Sr., Portage, Wis.); Jeff Jubinville** (F, Sr., Edmonton, Alberta); Reid Mimmack (G, Fr., Brainerd, Minn.); Hanna Moher (F, So., Milton, Ontario); Matt Prapavessis** (D, Jr., Oakville, Ontario); Andrew Walsh** (G, Jr., Dawson Creek, British Columbia); Sam Windle** (D, Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.); Danielle Williams (D, Sr., Waconia, Minn.) and Whitney Wivoda** (F, So., Fairbanks, Alaska).
