Beaver Pride names Joyce and Fitzgerald Athletes of the Week

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University’s Alexis Joyce and Gerry Fitzgerald have been selected as Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week, after outstanding athletic performances during the week of Nov. 24-30

Joyce notched an assist in the BSU women’s hockey team’s series against University of Minnesota Duluth. The Lakeville, Minn. native led the team with five blocked shots to enhance a Beaver defense that allowed just three goals in two games and shut out UMD’s power-play unit in five chances.

Joyce leads BSU freshmen with five points (1g-4a) and ranks fourth nationally with 39 blocked shots.

Fitzgerald led the BSU men’s hockey team to a split in a non-conference series with then-No. 16 St. Cloud State. The freshman from Port Alberni, British Columbia lifted BSU to a 4-1 win on Saturday with the first game-winning goal of his young career, taking a double-assist from his two brothers (Myles and Leo) and finding the back of the net at the 8:13 mark of the third period. Fitzgerald also scored a power-play goal and added an assist during the Beavers' loss on Friday night. He finished the weekend with a blocked shot and +2 plus/minus rating.

Just 14 games into his freshman season, Fitzgerald has two goals and three assists to rank ninth on the team and second among rookies with five points.
