Beavers drop the series finale at Lake Superior State, 4-2

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Taffy Abel Arena) – Lake Superior State University scored a pair of goals early in the first period and did not look back, posting a 4-2 victory over Bemidji State University to earn a series sweep over the Beavers Saturday in Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

Luke Sandler and Eric Drapluk each recorded two points to lead the Lakers, while Gordon Defiel turned aside 32 of 34 BSU shots to post the victory.

Markus Gerbrandt and Cory Ward netted BSU’s only offensive success of the weekend. Gerbrandt tallied his fifth goal of the season at the 9:50 mark of the third with help from Matt Prapavessis and Philip Brewer, while Ward took a pass form Ruslan Pedan and scored an extra-attacker goal with just two seconds remaining in regulation.

Michael Bitzer stopped made 14 saves in in 57:09 of time between the pipes. Following the loss, he falls to 5-7-1 on the season.

The Beavers, now 7-12-3 overall and 5-8-3 in WCHA play, break from league play to make their inaugural appearance in the North Star College Cup sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota. The four-game event will begin with BSU versus University of Minnesota Duluth at 4 p.m. Friday from Xcel Energy Center. Minnesota State University will play University of Minnesota at 7 p.m. that evening with the first round losers and first round winners playing at 4 and 7 p.m., respectively, Saturday.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).

  • BSU is now 1-8-2 on the road this season.
  • LSSU now holds a 26-21-2 edge in the series that got its start in 1966. In addition LSSU took a 13-11-1 lead in games played in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. versus the Beavers.
  • Markus Gerbrandt scored his fifth goal of the season Saturday, marking his first goal since Nov. 14—marking the end of 13-game scoreless streak for the junior.
  • Matt Prapavessis netted his team-leading ninth assist of the season.
  • Cory Ward Netted the Beavers first extra-attacker goal of the season late in the third period Saturday.
