Beavers earn series sweep with 4-1 win at Alabama-Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Von Braun Center) – Charlie O'Connor posted the first three-point game of his collegiate career and Reid Mimmack stopped 15-of-16 shots to lead the Bemidji state University men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory and a series sweep Friday at University of Alabama-Huntsville.

After a scoreless first period of play, the Beavers took 1-0 lead into the third period following Cory Ward's second goal of the season. Brendan Harms and O'Connor were credited assists on the play (16:06).

The Chargers got their only goal of the night off the stick of Chad Brears at the 7:04 mark of the third period, knotting the game 1-1.

Tied for just 15 seconds, Graeme McCormack potted his second goal of the weekend and sixth of the year at the 7:19 mark of the period to put the Beavers in the lead, 2-1, with help from Justin Baudry and Gerry Fitzgerald.

The Beavers' lead swelled to 3-1 at the 9:51 mark of the period as Baudry netted his first collegiate goal with help from Harms and O'Connor.

O'Connor settled the score a the 19:04 mark of the third with an empty-net tally.

While Bemidji State's power-play was help without a goal for the third straight game (0-for-3), the Beavers penalty-kill unit held the Chargers scoreless on two man advantage opportunities.

Mimmack, who was making his fourth start of the season, improved to 3-0-1 with the win.

Bemidji State (4-6-3; 3-5-2 WCHA) is back on the road next weekend. The Beavers travel Big Rapids, Mich. for a WCHA match up with Ferris State University (6-5-4; 5-4-2 WCHA). The series will get underway from Elwigleben Ice Arena at 6:07 p.m. Friday with a 6:07 opening faceoff set for Saturday’s finale.
