Michaelis hat trick pushes No. 11 Minnesota State past Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) – Locked in a 1-1 after 20 minutes, Minnesota State University, Mankato scored three times in the second period to break the tie and pull away with a 5-2, Western Collegiate Hockey Association, series-opening victory over Bemidji State University Friday.

The Mavericks not only potted a pair of even-strength goals, they also went 1-for-4 on the power play and netted a short-handed goal—the first BSU has allowed in 2017-18.

Marc Michaelis led a group of eight Mavericks to post at least a point, recording a hat trick, which included the game-winner.

Bemidji State’s top goal scorer, Kyle Bauman, netted his sixth tally of the season and Gerry Fitzgerald accounted for his third goal of 2017-18 to pace the Beavers.

The Mavericks opened the scoring at 8:34 mark of the first period. Edwin Hookenson got the benefit of a bounce off a BSU defender to record his first goal of the season. Just 1:18 later, the Beavers answered on a goal from Bauman. After a pass from Dillon Eichstadt set Bauman up with the puck, the Apopka, Fla. native found the upper corner to post is fifth point in as many games (4g-1a).

BSU and MSU opened the second period tied 1-1, but the deadlock would last only 1:13. With Dan Billett in the penalty box for a holding penalty carried over from the final moments of the first period, Michaelis light the lamp for a power-play goal. Michaelis would strike again at the 11:27 mark. Just 16 after Connor Mackey was escorted to the penalty box for interference, he beat BSU’s goaltender Michael Bitzer with help form C.J. Suess. Before the period would end, Nicolas Rivera posted an even-strength goal to increase the MSU lead to three goals (4-1).

Gerry Fitzgerald recorded his third goal of the season to cut the Maverick lead in half at the 3:55 mark of the third, but that was as close as the Beavers would get.

Michaelis finished the scoring with an empty-net goal with just over a minute to play.

Michael Bitzer turned aside 16 shots and was tagged with four goals in 59:29. He moves to 4-3-2 on the year.

Bemidji State, 4-3-2; 2-2-1-1 WCHA, and Minnesota State, 7-3-0 overall and a 5-2-0-0 WCHA, will hit the ice again tomorrow to settle the series. The opening face off is set for 7:07 p.m.
