BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- Bemidji State University scored four times in the final 21:33 and goaltender Michael Bitzer turned aside all 20 shots he faced to blank the University of Alaska Anchorage, 4-0, and head into the holiday break on a five-game (2-0-3) unbeaten streak.
With his 19th career shutout, Bitzer extended his own Western Collegiate Hockey Association and all-time BSU records.
Offensively, BSU was led by Gerry Fitzgerald and Adam Brady, who may not have found the back of the net, but each collected a pair of assists. Four different Beavers netted goals with Myles Fitzgerald on the docket for the game-winner.
After 38:27 of scoreless play, M. Fitzgerald corralled a Kyle Bauman rebound and finished a rush with his seventh goal of the season and third of the weekend. Brady was also credited, using an outlet pas to spark the play.
The Beavers took the one-goal lead into the third period and opened the period with 1:35 of power-play time, setting the tone for a penalty-riddled final 20 minutes of play. In all, six different players spent time in the penalty box in the third and BSU was the benefactor, going 2-for-4 on the man advantage in the third period along to finish the game 2-for-6.
Dickman potted the Beavers' first power-play marker at the 3:48 mark. G. Fitzgerald and Brady earned assist son the goal, which stood as the junior's fourth of the weekend. At the 9:55 mark, Brendan Harris was on the riht faceoff dot on the man advantage and turned an Aaron Miller pass into a 3-0 lead. Charlie Combs capped BSU's scoring with a slop shot that went bar down at 14:01 mark for his six goal of the season.
Bitzer moves to 7-5-5 on the season and 9-1-0 versus the Seawolves during his career.
The victory gives BSU is first WCHA series sweep of the season and first since a pair of 4-2 and 3-0 victories at Michigan Tech Feb. 3-4, 2017.
The Beavers, now 7-6-5 overall and 4-4-4-2 in WCHA play, break for the holidays and return to action Dec. 29 and 30 when they host long-time rival University of Alabama-Huntsville for a two-game league contest. Opening face off is set for 7:07 p.m. each night at Sanford Center.
