BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) – Senior Kyle Bauman scored a pair of third period special teams goals to lead the Bemidji State University men's hockey team to a 4-1 non-conference victory over the Air Force Academy Friday at Sanford Center. Bauman scored once on the power play and netted the Beavers' first short-handed goal of the season late in the period to headline the BSU attack.
The Falcons took the first lead of the game at the 16:50 mark when Bemidji, Minn. native Matt Serratore took the puck from Jordan Himley and Tyler Ledford for his first goal of the season. The goal would account for all of the first period scoring as the teams skated into the locker rooms with Air Force holding a 1-0 advantage.
Sophomore Adam Brady scored his second goal in as many home games firing a wrist shot from inside the left face off dot and tucked it inside the right post at the 2:45 mark of the second period. Justin Baudry and Brendan Harris were each credited with assists on the play.
The third period opened with the score even at 1-1, but it took BSU only 2:38 to break the tie. With Evan Giesler in the box for a hooking penalty, Bauman closed the power-play opportunity with a bullet for his first goal of the season. The lamplighter gave the Beavers’ their first lead of the game and provided a spark to the Bemidji State bench.
Less than five minutes later, Myles Fitzgerald made a tremendous individual effort to skate the puck into the zone, fight off Falcon defenders and muscle a shot through the legs of Billy Christopoulos. Dan Billett earned an assist on the play after digging the puck out of the deep corner and finding M. Fitzgerald streaking toward the neutral zone.
Bauman finished the scoring at the 15:48 mark after he split two defenders and flipped a backhanded shot into the upper right corner. The unassisted goal stood as his second of the night and came while the Beavers were short handed.
In all, six different BSU players recorded at least one point with Bauman (2g) and Harris (2a) leading the way with two points apiece.
Michael Bitzer picked up his second victory of the season making 18 saves, while backstopped the BSU penalty-kill unit to a perfect 3-for-3 night versus the Falcons’ power-play unit. He is now 2-0-1 in 2017-18.
Bemidji State, now 2-0-1, and Air Force (3-1-1) will conclude the non-conference series Saturday with a 7:07 p.m. opening faceoff.
All current or former members of the U.S. Military who purchase a ticket will be eligible for an additional ticket free of charge if they show a valid ID at the box office as the Beavers celebrate Military Appreciation Weekend.
