BEMIDJI, Minn. – FOX Sports North, in conjunction with the National Hockey League’s Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Hockey and the Bemidji Organizing Committee, announced the date and schedule for the 13th Annual Hockey Day Minnesota presented by Wells Fargo this morning near the Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox statue. The three-day event will take place Jan.17-19 and will include games featuring the Bemidji State University Men’s and Women’s Hockey teams.

Representatives from the Minnesota Wild, FOX Sports North, Wells Fargo and all participating teams were in attendance to announce that Bemidji will be the first host city to make Hockey Day Minnesota into a three-day celebration. The broadcast lineup features four live games at two separate locations, three in Bemidji and one in Saint Paul.

The first city on the Mississippi will serve as the backdrop for the outdoor rink constructed on Lake Bemidji’s south shore. Preparations to the site located just west of the Sanford Center parking lot are already under way. In addition to power, lights, a scoreboard, video boards and temporary seating for over 3,000 spectators, the organizing committee is making plans to have food and beverage tents and VIP areas protected from the elements to be installed.

“The bar has been raised every year for this event and we are working to make it even bigger and better,” said Bissonette. “I’m confident our city, our region, and the State of Hockey will be very proud of Hockey Day Minnesota Bemidji 2019!”

“It’s remarkable to see how Hockey Day Minnesota continues to grow year after year. Bemidji has already stepped up in a big way, we’re really looking forward to seeing what new elements they bring to the big day,” said Mike Dimond, Senior Vice President and General Manager for FOX Sports North.

The Bemidji High School Girl’s team will officially kick off the festivities with a game versus Woodbury High School at 7 p.m. Jan. 17. The Bemidji State men will host Michigan Tech for a Western Collegiate Hockey Association match up Minnesota State University, Mankato at 7 p.m. Jan. 18 and the BSU women will battle Minnesota State University, Mankato for a non-conference affair at 1 p.m. Jan. 19 as a part of the FSN live broadcast. The seven-game weekend will conclude at Xcel Energy Center when the Wild host the Columbus Blue Jackets at 8 p.m.

“Bemidji is raising the bar for Hockey Day Minnesota 2019 to be another spectacular celebration for the game we love,” said Minnesota Wild President Matt Majka. “We look forward to sharing these exciting matchups and experience with hockey fans throughout the State of Hockey.”

“Bemidji and our entire region are excited to host Hockey Day Minnesota 2019 and it’s been incredible to see the amount of local support we’ve received since it was announced in January,” said Brian Bissonette, Marketing Lead of the Bemidji Local Organizing Committee. “Our hockey roots run deep, from our long-established youth and high school programs through Division I programs at Bemidji State University and we can’t wait to showcase that history and all of what the first city on the Mississippi has to offer.”

The Jan. 19 games in Bemidji will be part of a day-long television event broadcast on FOX Sports North, designed as a celebration of the game from peewees to pros. Proceeds of the event will benefit the Bemidji Youth Hockey Association and the expansion of outdoor hockey facilities in Bemidji.

The Jan. 18 outdoor game brings the BSU men back to their roots. The last time the Beavers played in the Northern Minnesota elements was 1967. BSU played at a rink, often called the 19th Street Rink for seven seasons beginning in 1960. By the time the Beavers moved indoor to the newly constructed John Glas Fieldhouse Nov. 17, 1967, BSU has compiled a 35-8-1 record at the rink.

While the BSU women’s program didn’t get its start until 1998-99, the team also has experience outdoors. The Beavers skated in the Camp Randall Classic, Feb. 6, 2010. BSU lost to the University of Wisconsin, 6-1, in front of an announced crowd of 8,263.

One way to guarantee a ticket to the BSU-MTU men’s game, which not part of the Hockey Day Minnesota Jan. 19 line up, is to purchase a 2018-19 season ticket. Starting at $275, a 2018-19 season ticket will include the Jan. 18 outdoor game versus Michigan Tech and all 17 of the Beavers other regular-season games.
