BEMIDJI, Minn. – Newcomer Owen Sillinger scored twice and Adam Brady recorded three assists to lead the Bemidji State University Men’s Ice Hockey team to a 5-1, exhibition victory over Lakehead University Saturday.
The Beavers found the back of the net just 51 seconds after the opening face off and did not look back. Sillinger was on the doorstep to tip in a pass from Aaron Miller and Adam Brady.
Owning a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes, the Beavers exploded for three goals in the second period. Hampus Sjödahl scored at the 6:03 mark from Ross Armour. Then it was Charlie Combs’ turn with help from Brendan Harris and Brady at the 7:19 mark. Harris put BSU up 3-1 at the 14:53 mark, netting a short-handed goal with help from Alex Ierullo and Dillon Eichstadt.
The Thunderwolves had the benefit of six minutes on the power play in the third period and although they were unable to convert, they spent long stretches of time in the Beavers’ zone and broke up the shutout at the 7:18 mark on a goal from Sam Schutt.
Sillinger capped a nice Beaver debut at the 11:34 mark of the third period when he beat the LU goaltender for his second goal of the night. Brady collected his third assist of the evening on the play, while Miller was credited with his second.
All three Bemidji State goalies saw time in the game, each playing for one period. Jack Burgart started and three saves. Henry Johnson made 11 saves in the second period and collected the exhibition win. Zach Driscoll, who played the third period, collected seven saves and allowed one goal.
The Beavers officially get their season underway next weekend when they battle the University of North Dakota in a non-conference home-and-home series. BSU will host UND at 7:07 p.m. Friday at Sanford Center, while the Fighting Hawks will play host to the Beavers at Ralph Engelstad Arena at 7:07 p.m. Saturday.
