Beavers fail to find the net in 3-0 loss at Northern Michigan

MARQUETTE, Mich. (Berry Events Center) – The Bemidji State University men’s hockey team dropped its 2018-19 Western Collegiate Hockey Association opener Friday, 3-0, at Northern Michigan University.

Sophomore goaltender Henry Johnson stopped 25 of the 26 shots he faced, but trailing 1-0 after 59 minutes of play, the Wildcats pushed the Beavers’ hand and NMU scored a pair of empty-net goals.

In an evenly-matched first period, BSU out shot NMU 9-8 despite supplying the Wildcats with a pair of power-play opportunities.

The Beavers opened the second period on the man-advantage, but sputtered out of the locker room and the stumble set the tone for the period. The Wildcats outshot the Beavers 10-3 and at the 16:55 mark, Ryan Black found the back of the net to give NMU its first lead of the game.

The goal would be all NMU would need as one of the league’s premier goaltenders Atte Tolvanen was on his game, making 20 saves, including eight during the final 20 minutes alone, for his first shutout of the season.

Before the final horn would sound NMU got goals from Denver Pierce and Darien Craighead to bring the score to 3-0.

For the third consecutive game, the BSU penalty-kill unit was flawless. Tonight the Beavers were 3-for-3 on the kill and moved to 11-for-11 on the young season.

Making his second start of the season, Johnson made 25 saves and backstopped the penalty-kill unit but allowed the deciding goal and dropped to 1-1-0.

The Beavers (1-1-1; 0-1-0 NSIC) looks to even the series tomorrow when it will return to Berry Events Center for a 6:07 p.m. opening faceoff versus Northern Michigan.
