Driscoll backstops Bemidji State to 3-0 victory to open series with Alaska

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) – Zach Driscoll made 25 saves en route to a shutout and Owen Sillinger collected an assist to go with his team-leading third game-winning goal as the Bemidji State University men’s hockey team earned a 3-0 victory over the University of Alaska Friday at Sanford Center.

A slow start had the Beavers chasing the Nanooks through most of the first period, but a strong play by BSU's netminder sparked a dominant second period and Bemidji State pulled out its 10th victory of the season.

After being out shot 16-7 during the first 20 minutes of play, BSU bounced back to take a 26-22 edge in shots after posting 19 attempts on net in the second period despite skating off a pair of penalties.

BSU got on the scoreboard at the 1:51 mark of the second frame when Sillinger corralled a rebound and potted his sixth goal of the season. Dillon Eichstadt and Justin Baudry were credited with assists on the play.

BSU doubled its lead at the 15:39 mark. Sillinger found blueliner Tyler Vold at the top of the left face off circle and the Andover, Minn. native unleashed a laser for his second goal of the season. Nick Cardelli earned the second assist on the play after finding Sillinger streaking out of the defensive zone.

BSU continued to control play in the third period. The score remained 2-0 into the final 2:02 of the game when the Beavers took advantage of an empty net and put the game out of reach. Ethan Somoza was the benefactor of a play started on the sidewall by Adam Brady. Ross Armour carried the puck into the zone and found Somoza on across the crease for a tap in.

The victory was Driscoll's fifth of the year, while it was his first shutout in a BSU sweater. He moves to 5-4-1 on the season.

The Beavers improve to 10-10-3 overall and 8-6-1-1 in WCHA play and will meet Alaska again tomorrow to wrap up the series. Opening faceoff is set for 5:07 p.m. at Sanford Center. Following the game, join BSU men’s and women’s hockey players on the ice for “Skate With the Beavers.”
