Pushed into overtime Beavers earn extra point in 3-on-3 play

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (Ewigleben Arena) -- After seeing a 3-2 win slip away with just 10 seconds left in regulation, Charlie Combs netted a goal 4:50 into 3-on-3 play to allow the Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team earn to an extra point in the WCHA standings after a 3-3 tie.

The tie allows the Beavers to skate into the series finale unbeaten in their last six meetings with the Bulldogs (4-0-2), while they are unbeaten in three of their last four contests (2-1-1).

BSU took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. After playing nearly 16 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Beavers got a break when Tyler Kirkup picked up a loose puck and fired it on net for his second goal of the season and second in as many games.

Ferris State stole momentum early in the second period on a Hunter Wendt short-handed goal just 1:53 in to the frame. The Bulldogs would score again at the 5:36 mark and held the 2-1 lead through 40 minutes. FSU dominated the second period using a pair of power-play opportunities late to finish the period with a 13-2 edge in shots on goal.

BSU bounced back in the third. Blueliner Tyler Vold knotted the score at 2-2 at the 2:46 mark of the period. The sophomore's third goal of the season came after a Brad Johnson blast from the point and a rebound trickled through the pads of FSU goaltender Justin Kapelmaster. Bemidji State regained the lead at the 6:09 mark on a goal off the stick of Alex Ierullo. The freshman capped the scoring play on a redirect after Kirkup forced a turnover and co-captain Dillon Eichstadt fired a bullet from the point.

The Beavers' rode the 3-2 advantage into the final minute of regulation when the Bulldogs pulled Kapelmaster for an extra attacker. FSU buzzed around the zone and got the game-tying goal with 9.1 seconds left when a puck thrown at the goal bounced off a skate and onto the stick of Trevor Recktenwald for his second goal of 2018-19.

Neither team was able to find the net in the first overtime period and through 4:50 of the 3-on-3 frame before Combs scored.

Ierullo and Kirkup, who each logged a goal and an assist, led the Beavers offensively. In net, Zach Driscoll made 32 saves in 64:55. He moves to 8-6-2 on the year.

The Beavers, now 13-12-4 overall and 11-8-2-1 in league play, looks for its fourth sweep of the WCHA season when it again goes head-to-head with the Bulldogs. Opening face off is set for 6:07 p.m. (CT) at Ewigleben Arena.
