Bemidji State’s Driscoll named WCHA Goaltender of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Bemidji State University goaltender Zach Driscoll been selected for a Western Collegiate Hockey Association weekly honor for his role in Beavers’ five-point WCHA series victory versus Northern Michigan University, Feb. 15-16. It marks Driscoll’s third player of the week award of the 2018-19 season.

Driscoll backstopped BSU to a five-point series victory versus Northern Michigan, Feb. 15-16, helping the Beavers to move into a tie for fourth place in the WCHA standings. After a 16-save, 65-minute performance Friday to earn a tie and put the Beavers in position to steal the extra point in 3-on-3 overtime play, he recorded his third shutout of the season Saturday. He made 21 saves in the 3-0 win. In addition he served as the last line of defense in a BSU penalty-kill unit that finished the weekend a perfect 5-for-5 and has not allowed a power-play goal in 12 games and 39 opportunities. Driscoll finished the weekend with 37 saves on 39 shots for a .949 save percentage and posted a 0.96 goals against average allowing two short-handed goals in 125:00 between the pipes and two starts.

Driscoll was also recognized as Goaltender of the Week Nov. 26 and Jan. 21.

In addition to the Driscoll, Lake Superior State University’s Max Humitz was named Forward of the Week and Steven Ruggiero earned the Defenseman of the Week nod, while Ferris State University freshman Roni Salmenkangas was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week.

The Beavers, now 15-12-5 overall and 13-8-3-2 in WCHA play will return to Sanford Center this weekend for their final home series of the regular season when they host Bowling Green State University. BSU will host the Falcons will meet for a 7:07 p.m. opening face off Friday to get the series underway before the teams will clash again at 7:07 p.m. Saturday.
