St. Cloud State pushes Bemidji State to 4-4 tie

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- No. 7/8 St. Cloud State University rallied to erase a four-goal deficit netting four goals, including back-to-back short-handed tallies, in 10:40 seconds to push Bemidji State University to overtime and ultimately, the teams settled for a non-conference draw to open the season.

Despite surrendering the lead late, BSU looked to have stolen the game in the final moments winning an offensive zone faceoff to junior defenseman Tyler Vold, but after a review by officials, the goal was waived off due to a Beaver being in the crease and interfering with the Huskies goaltender.

After skating into the second period locked in a 0-0 tie, the Beavers dominated play. BSU got goals from Alex Adam and Ross Armour separated by just 1:49 and owed a 2-0 lead 4:58 into the second period. The team added a third goal off the stick of Adam Brady at the 16:24 mark and would finish the frame with an 11-8 edge in shots despite killing a pair of penalties.

Brady stretched the Beavers' lead to four goals just 26 seconds into the third period before the Huskies got on the board at the 4:52 mark.

Leading 4-1 with just over 15 minutes to play, BSU looked to have things rolling in its favor as SCSU's Easton Brodzinski took a five-minute major for checking from behind. The penalty put the Beavers on a five-minute man advantage, but ironically it sparked the SCSU offense. Jask Ahcan scored a short-handed goal at the 10:01 mark and Clark Kuster put BSU on its heels with another at the 13:01 mark. Sam Hentges finished the comeback picking the pocket of a BSU player in the neutral zone, skated it in and found the back of the net.

Brady lead the Beavers offensively. The senior posted the BSU's third and fourth goals of the night, while 11 players posted at least one point.

In net, Zach Driscoll turned aside 26 shots in 65 minutes of play, which included backing a penalty-kill unit that snuffed out all four of SCSU's power-play chances, with four saves.

Both BSU and SCSU moved to 0-0-1 on the year. The teams will face off again at 6:07 p.m. tomorrow to decide the series.
