3/8/2010 - BASEBALL Beavers head south for first taste of outdoor baseball

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University baseball team heads to Kansas and Arkansas for spring break to get its first taste of outdoor baseball March 9-11. The Beavers are slated to play two nine inning games with No. 8 Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan. March 9-10 (3 p.m. starts) and a nine inning contest with Arkansas Tech March 11 at 7 p.m. in Russelville, Ark.

About the BSU: The Beavers are 9-7 this season, playing all 16 games at the H.H.H. Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. BSU earned two nonconference wins against Minnesota State University, Mankato March 3 to earn a four-game split with the Mavericks. The Beavers won the games 4-3 and 5-1, after falling 6-0 and 3-1 in the doubleheader the day before. Junior outfielder Nick Jelacie (Brainerd, Minn.) leads the Beavers in batting average at a .412 clip, playing and starting in all 16 contests. He also leads the squad in total bases (37), hits (21) and runs (14). Freshman right-hander Ryan Anderson (Lino Lakes, Minn.) owns the lowest ERA on the staff with a 1.29 mark. He has appeared in three games, making his first collegiate start and earning his first win against Minnesota State March 3. He has pitched seven innings, striking out four.

About the Opponents:

Emporia State - The Hornets are 10-3 overall and 7-1 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), owning the No. 8 spot in today’s edition of the Division II Collegiate Baseball national poll. ESU went 3-1 in its last action at conference-foe Fort Hays State, March 5-7. Junior David Albritton owns a .392 batting average in a team-high 51 at bats, while leading the squad in hits (20), RBI (19) and runs (15). Senior right-hander Colby Killian has started three games for the Hornets, posting a 2-1 record and 2.00 ERA, hurling one complete game and fanning 12 batters.

Arkansas Tech - The Wonder Boys are 13-6 this season, with a 9-3 mark at home. Arkansas Tech went 2-1 at the Heffington Optical Festival Tournament March 5-7 in Springfield, Mo., which included a win against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference’s St. Cloud State by the score of 9-7 Junior Matt Johnson has a .458 batting average, playing and starting all 19 games for Tech. He leads the team in hits (33) and stolen bases (13). Senior Josh Floriani (RHP) has five starts and a perfect 5-0 record this season, throwing to a 3.65 ERA and striking out 36 batters.

Next Up: The Beavers begin their home and NSIC schedule March 20-21 with a four-game set slated with Wayne State College at the BSU Baseball Field.
