BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University baseball team's 2010 home finale was spoiled Tuesday, as Jamestown College came to the BSU Baseball Field and took two from the BSU. The Jimmies won game one 10-1 and game two 5-4 in nine innings, sweeping the road-weary Beavers.

The Bemidji State (16-33, 7-23 NSIC) baseball team won’t make any excuses, but the Beavers got off the bus at 10 p.m. Monday night from its four-game series at Concordia University, St. Paul and had to be back at the field 12 hours later for batting practice for a nonconference doubleheader with Jamestown College. Tomorrow, BSU closes its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season at the University of Mary in Bismark, N.D., needing to save its bats and arms. The result was just four hits in the first game and eight in game two, while riding five pitchers for the 16 innings. But BSU will give credit to the Jimmies, who came east with hot bats and strong arms on the mound.    

In game one, the Jimmies (32-9) scored three in the first inning off BSU starter junior Brian Murphy (RHP, Longville, Minn.), who was making his first start of the season. The Beavers responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Colon Smith (IF, Waddel, Ari.) scored on a two-out single by junior Joe Chism (OF, Great Bend, Kan.) after reaching first on a fielder’s choice and then stealing his team-leading 11th bag of the season. The game got out of reach in a hurry for the Beavers, as the Jimmies scored one in the second and three in the third for a 7-1 lead. BSU posted zeros for the rest of the game, as JC was able to added three in the sixth to win 10-1.  

Murphy threw three innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, on eight hits. Junior righty Ryan Guy (Fountain Hills, Ari.) pitched three complete innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Billy Sather (Brainerd, Minn.) made his second appearance of the season, hurling one hit-less inning with one strikeout.

Game two started like game one for BSU, unable to score runs and the Jimmies owning a 4-0 lead after two frames. JC got the runs off BSU starter freshman Ryan Van Someren (RHP, Milaca, Minn.), who was making his second start of the season and his second start in a period of a week. The Beaver bats finally came alive in the fourth, as the home team posted a four-spot.

The Beavers got all their runs with zero outs, starting with a Smith bunt single. Junior outfielder Nick Jelacie (Brainerd, Minn.) followed with a single to left, then junior Ryan Sander (1B, St. James, Minn.) drove Smith home with a single through the left side. The next batter, junior Doug Peterson (OF/RHP, Bemidji, Minn.) crushed a 2-0 pitch over the 24-foot left field chain-link wall, recording his fifth homerun of the season and the third in a week. Last Wednesday against U-Mary, Peterson hit a grand slam in game one and then a two-run shot in game two.

Goose eggs were posted on the board from both teams all the way to the ninth inning when JC shortstop PJ Pina hit his first homerun of the season over the left field wall, sailing just on the fair side of the foul pole.

Van Someren pitched 8.1 innings, going strong after allowing the four runs in the first two innings. He threw 127 pitches, 78 for strikes, allowing the five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Smith had the only multi-hit game for BSU, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Smith also stole his 12th base of the season, he is a perfect 12-for-12 in stolen base attempts in 2010. Peterson recorded his third multi-RBI game with the three-run shot.  
 
The Beavers finished their 2010 home season 4-14, getting 18 games in at the BSU Baseball Field. All four wins came against NSIC opponents, including an 8-7 victory against then-No. 29 Winona State University April 2.

The Beavers close its 32-game conference season Wednesday at U-Mary in Bismark, N.D. at 2 p.m.
