BEMIDJI, Minn. - Less than a week after Bemidji State University head coach
Jeff Tesch kicked off the 2010 football signing period by announcing 27 commitments, today he has added four more to the list.
Dustin Dowd (Brooklyn Park, Minn.),
Tyler Jones (Mora, Minn.),
Samuel King (Grand Forks, N.D.) and
Wakely Pister (Velva, N.D.) have each committed to play for the Beavers and attend BSU next fall.
• Dustin Dowd (OL, 6-4, 266; Brooklyn Park Minn. / Park Center HS)
Played three seasons on the Park Center varsity football team, starting in both his junior and senior campaigns... A captain in 2008 and 2009, Dowd earned all-state honorable mention, all-region honorable mention and all-area honorable mention awards last fall, while garnering All-Northwest Suburban Conference accolades in 2008 and 2009... Did not allow a single sack in two years as a starter... Anchored a offensive line that blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher and posted over 2,000 yards on the ground as a team... Also manned the trenches on defense... Accumulated 36 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss and nine quarterback sacks for Park Center over the last two seasons... Was a recipient of the Pirates’ team awards for MVP, co-offensive player and its coach’s award.
• Sam King (QB, 6-1, 165; Grand Forks, N.D. / Red River HS)
A two-sport student-athlete at Red River High School, King is a three-time football letterwinner and has earned two letters in baseball... He quarterbacked RRHS to a Cushman Classic victory, a 6-4 overall record and playoff berth in 2009... Piled up 2,543 yards and 30 touchdowns through the air as a senior, which included eight rushing touchdowns... Completed 53-percent of his passes last fall... Was named All-Eastern Dakota Conference.
• Wakely Pister (DL, 6-2, 210; Velva, N.D. / Velva HS)
Pister comes to BSU after sitting out his entire senior season due a knee injury... A member of two North Dakota State Class A Championship teams (2006, 2009), Pister was a first-team all-state defensive lineman as a junior... Broke into the varsity ranks on the offensive side of the ball as the Vikings’ regular tight end... Lists his greatest athletic thrill as a 77-yard interception return in the quarterfinals of the state tournament in 2008... Is a state qualifier in the shot put and discus, placing third in the discus and eighth in the shot as a junior... He is a regular on the Velva High School Honor Roll.
• Tyler Jones (RB, 5-9, 170; Mora, Minn. /Mora HS)
Helped lead Mora High School to a 10-3 overall record and a trip to the Minnesota State Tournament semi-final game in 2009... Captained the Mustangs as a senior... Played on both sides of the ball seeing time at running back and linebacker... Garnered all-section accolades at the conclusion of his sophomore and junior seasons... Played high school football for former Beaver football alumnus Randy Qual... Also plays hockey and baseball for the Mustangs... Was selected football weight man of the year two times and hockey weight man three times... Jones is currently the captain of the MHS hockey team... Is a constant on the honor roll.
The addition of these four student-athletes brings Tesch’s 2010 recruiting class to 31. In all, the well-balanced class includes 16 offensive players, 14 on the defensive side of the ball and a kicker/punter.
The group is comprised of 30 high school seniors who will join the program as true freshmen next year and a transfer who has one year of eligibility remaining.
The 2010 class has been drawn from five states, with 20 hailing from Minnesota. In addition, committed players currently reside in Wisconsin (5), North Dakota (4), Georgia (1) and Illinois (1). The 2010 BSU roster will feature players from 14 states stretching from coast to coast.
Bemidji State finished the 2009 campaign with an 8-3 overall record and a 7-3 mark in league play. With eight wins, BSU has now posted eight or more wins five times since Tesch took the reigns of the program 14 years ago. In the 70 years prior to his arrival, Bemidji State recorded just one eight-win season.
Tesch returns 11 starters on the offensive side of the ball, which includes First-Team All-NSIC quarterback
Derek Edholm (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) and eight starters on defense, led by
Jordan Lardinois (Sr., DE, New Franken, Wis.) a First-Team All-NSIC defensive lineman.
