Over 70 players are expected to take part in the exhibition, which is free and open to the public allowing Beaver football fans a sneak peek at the program’s 2010 squad. The game matches the Beavers’ offense unit against its defense and uses a unique scoring system which awards points for both offensive and defensive achievements. The offense will earn a point for gaining a first down, six points for a touchdown, three points for a field goal and a point for a successful extra point, while the defenders gain two points for preventing the offense from getting a first down, an extra point or field goal and six points for a fumble recovery or an interception (a fumbled snap is not considered a fumble for scoring purposes). A two-point deduction will be enforced for each penalty committed. In addition to the spring game, the BSU football program will also hold its annual youth football camp for area children currently in kindergarten through sixth grade on Friday, April 23 at Chet Anderson Stadium. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. and will go through 5:30 p.m. when the clinic is slated to begin. The cost to participate is $15. Participants will receive fundamental instruction from current BSU coaches and student-athletes in throwing, catching, blocking and kicking, a meal and a Beaver football T-shirt. In addition, children will have the opportunity to mingle with BSU student-athletes during an autograph session. Registration forms can be obtained by going to www.bemidjistate.edu/football. Bemidji State finished the 2009 campaign with an 8-3 overall record and a 7-3 mark in league play to finish third in the NSIC North Standings. With eight wins, BSU has now posted eight or more wins five times since head coach Jeff Tesch took the reigns of the program 14 years ago. In the 70 seasons prior to his arrival, Bemidji State recorded just one eight-win campaign. Tesch returns 11 starters on the offensive side of the ball, which includes First-Team All-NSIC quarterback Derek Edholm (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) and eight starters on a defense led by Jordan Lardinois (Sr., DE, New Franken, Wis.) a First-Team All-NSIC defensive lineman. --bsu-- ![]() |
