FAYETTE, Iowa (Eischied Complex) - The Bemidji State University softball team increased their losing streak to five games after dropping two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contests 8-3 and 3-0 to Upper Iowa University Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers (7-13, 2-6 NSIC) got a strong pitching performance from Courtney Anderson (Fr., P, Virginia, Minn.) in the second game, but the Peacocks (14-10, 5-3 NSIC) were able to walk away with the two victories.
A five-run seventh for UIU broke a 3-2 lead open, and the Beavers fell 8-3 after getting outhit 9-8.
Alison Willard (Sr., P, Hutchinson, Minn.) got the starting nod and lasted 6.2 innings. She gave up eight runs (six earned) on eight hits, while striking out six and walking two. Anderson came in and recorded the final out. Christy Loan went all 7.0 innings for Upper Iowa, allowing three runs on eight hits, walking and striking out three.
Mara Johnson (Sr., 2B, Bemidji, Minn.) and Jamie Lund (So., P, Grantsburn, Wisc.) both went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead BSU, and Lund had two runs batted in. Casey Coon and Kami Appelt each had multiple hits, and Appelt paced the Peacocks with four RBI.
The Beavers were outhit 6-2 in the second game, and allowed two in the fourth and one in the sixth without being able to respond.
Anderson pitched a complete game, allowing three runs and striking out five. Stefani Schulte went 6.0 innings, allowing two hits and striking out five. Erica Maisto pitched the final inning and struck out two.
Kasey Callison (Sr., 1B, Eagle River, Alaska) and Bridget Smith (Jr., SS, International Falls, Minn.) recorded the two Bemidji State hits. Erin Bennek and Schulte both went 2-for-3, and each recorded an RBI.
Bemidji State is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. matchup with Northern State University Tuesday, opening its home slate.
