CLERMONT, Fla. - The Bemidji State University softball team picked up a split Tuesday with a 6-1 win over Post University, a Division II school out of Waterbury, Conn., and then fell 7-0 to No. 24 Grand Valley State University at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. The Beavers are now 5-5 on the season and tie their season win total from last year.
Against Post, BSU was paced by stellar pitching led by Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., LHP, Esko, Minn.) who went 5.1 innings and only allowed one run. She gave up seven hits and struck out three Post batters. Saralampi was relieved by Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) who shut the Eagles down in 1.2 innings pitched. Anderson had three strikeouts and gave up no hits. Saralampi got the Beavers out of several jams where Post had runners on second and third with only one out but with strong pitching and solid defense was able to get out of tough situations.
Bemidji State was paced by Summer Monsrud (Fr., OF, Bemidji, Minn.) who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one RBI and one stolen base as she continued a strong start to her freshman campaign. Megan Beard (Sr., IF, Eveleth, Minn.) also had a strong game against Post as she went 2-for-3 with e RBI.
“Our game against Post was our most complete game of the season so far,” said head coach Rick Supinski. “We hit well, we fielded the ball well and our pitching was great. This is a great stepping stone as we move forward.”
Post went 24-24 last saeson and is now 1-5 on the year after losses to BSU and No. 21 University of Tampa Tuesday.
Against the Lakers, BSU used strong pitching early but was unable to get on base as hard hit balls failed to fall against a strong Grand Valley State squad. Freshman Allison Roberts (RHP, Crystal, Minn.) got the start in the circle for the Beavers and went four innings for BSU. Roberts had the Beavers down only 2-0 to the Lakers, one of the most potent offensive teams in the country, before GVSU got to Roberts in the fifth. Anderson came in relief of Roberts and pitched the rest of the way. She gave up 10 hits and seven earned runs. Anderson pitched two innings and shut down the Lakers with three strikeouts.
The Lakers' Hannah Santora threw a two-hitter against the Beavers with Beard getting the only two hits for the Beavers.
Grand Valley State hit ..370 as a team and led the NCAA with 76 home runs paced by Daktronics, Inc. National Player of the Year Katie Martin, who hit 20 home runs last season. Martin went 2-for-4 on the game with one run scored...Brianna Taylor paced the Lakers as she went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, one home run and one run scored.
Bemidji State will play an exhibtion against Grand Rapids Community College at 4 p.m. CT and a regular-season game versus Saint Vincent College out of Latrobe, Penn at 6 p.m. CT to continue play in Clermont, Fla. BSU is 3-3 in games in Florida so far with victories over Hannibal LaGrange University, Simmons College and Post University.
