Anderson and Orban garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University student-athletes Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) and Brance Orban (Jr., F, Lethbridge, Alberta) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Feb. 27-March 4.
 
Anderson went 2-1 with a 1.64 ERA in 17 innings pitched during the opening week of action for the Bemidji State University softball team. Her first victory of the season came as a five-inning shutout of University of Minnesota, Crookston Feb. 29. Anderson gave up three hits and had two strikeouts against the Golden Eagles in the 3-0 victory. March 4 versus Hannibal LaGrange University, Anderson pitched seven innings, matched a career-high with 14 strikeouts and gave up one run on four hits as she picked up the win. Anderson’s lone loss of the week came Feb. 28 against University of Minnesota Duluth as she gave up five runs, three earned, in five innings pitched.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the first of the season for Anderson and the BSU softball team. Anderson has previously been selected for the award four other times throughout her career.  

Orban led the Bemidji State men’s ice hockey team to its first road sweep of the season March 2-3 recording four points on the weekend (2g-2a), while contributing on the decisive goals both nights. Orban logged an assist on the game-winnng goal in a 2-1 victory to open the series at Alaska-Anchorage before matching a career-high, three-point game as the Beavers completed the sweep with a 5-4 win in the 2011-12 season finale. The junior posted an assist on a second period goal before tying the game 4-4 on the power play late in the period with his eighth goal of the season. In the third period the junior would add the game-winning goal.  He finished the weekend with a plus/minus rating of +2.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award is also the first of the season for Orban, while it marks the seventh time a member of the BSU men’s hockey team has been honored by the organization. He follows Aaron McLeod (Jr., F, Ottawa, Ontario) who was selected for the honor Feb. 15, Dan Bakala (Sr., G, Calgary, Alberta) the Jan. 4 pick, three-time recipient (Oct. 26, Dec. 7 and Dec. 14) Andrew Walsh (Fr., G, Dawson Creek, British Columbia) and the Dec. 7 selection Brad Hunt (Sr., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia).

The BSU softball team, which is in the midst of its 2012 spring trip, is 5-5 on the season. The team plays Grand Rapids Community College in an exhibition at 4 p.m. today before a clash with St. Vincent College (Pa.) at 6 p.m. tonight. The team wraps up its trip playing University of St. Francis (4 p.m.) and Urbana University (6 p.m.) tomorrow and a doubleheader versus Wilmington University (Del.) beginning at 8 a.m. Friday.

The BSU men’s hockey team finished the 2011-12 regular season 17-16-3 overall and 11-14-3 in league play to hold down ninth in the WCHA standings.  As the No. 9 seed, the Beavers will travel to fourth-seeded University of North Dakota for a best-of-three opening round of the WCHA playoffs March 9-11. The opening game is slated for a 7:37 p.m. face off at Ralph Engelstad Arena Friday, while Saturday and, if needed, Sunday, contests are each set to begin at 7:07 p.m. First round series winners advance to the Red Baron/WCHA Final Five at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. March 15-17.
