Beavers sweep the day and start the season 3-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University softball team opened the 2014 season today wining games against Jamestown College, Valley City State University and University of Wisconsin-Superior to open the season with a 3-0 record for the first time since 2006.

In the first game of the day, BSU and the Jimmies were locked in a pitchers’ duel. Neither team was able to cross the plate in the first four and a half innings. Bemidji State scored the first, and what proved to be the only, run in the bottom of the fifth starting with a lead off ground rule double from Brittany Lenander (OF, Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn.). After a groundout by Danielle Jecmen (P, Fr., Bloomingdale, Ill.), which advanced Lenander to third, Megan Bergeson (IF, Sr., New London, Minn.) beat out an infield hit to plate Lenander giving BSU a 1-0 lead.

Jecmen pitched fantastic in her collegiate debut as she did not allow a hit in seven innings of work and posted nine strikeouts.

Game two would be another tight affair. BSU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to a pair of doubles by Courtney O’Connor (C, Fr., Shakopee, Minn.) and Angie Roberts (OF, Fr., Andover, Minn.). The Beavers did not have many base runners but the ones they did have crossed home plate as BSU was 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position. BSU tacked on another run in the seventh to preserve a 4-1 win.

Jessica Yost (P, Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) scattered eight hits and posted seven strikeouts to get her first collegiate victory in the game.

Bemidji State broke out the bats in big way in the third game of the day as it totaled 15 hits against UW-Superior. It was 2-1 until the top of the seventh when the Beavers broke open the game with three runs. The big hit in the inning was double by Megan Boser (IF, Fr., Pierz, Minn.) to plate Libby Bingham (IF, Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Alayna Krejci (IF, Fr., Wausau, Wis.). In the circle, Allison Roberts (P, Jr., Crystal, Minn.) allowed just two runs and both of those were via the home run. Other than the two big flies, Roberts scattered three Yellow Jacket hits to help lift BSU to the 5-2 win.

BSU will try to remain unbeaten tomorrow as it continues with nonconference action in St. Paul as it takes on Valley City State (9 a.m.), Carleton College (11 a.m.) and Wisconsin Superior (1 p.m.).
