BSU softball remains perfect in Myrtle Beach with a pair of victories

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Bemidji State University softball team was able to remain unbeaten on its spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. after defeating Delaware Valley College, 10-1, and Arcadia University, 2-0, Tuesday. The pair of victories brings BSU’s record to 8-2, which ties its win total from last season.

Delaware Valley College would score the first run of the game on a RBI double in the first frame, but BSU used a patient, yet effective approach to score 10 unanswered runs, en route to a 10-1 win. The Beavers drew a season-high eight walks and posted 15 hits against DVC pitching, while every BSU batter reached base at least once. Senior Nicole Dupay (OF, Woodbury, Minn.) and Chelsey Watson (1B, So., Clearwater, Minn.) led the Beavers’ offense with three hits each.

Freshman Jessica Yost (P, Bemidji, Minn.) was dominant in the pitcher’s circle for BSU. The freshman hurler allowed just three Aggie base runners, while compiling eight strikeouts to earn her second victory of the season.

Pitching was the name of the game in the second contest of the day. Both starting pitchers held the opposing team off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fourth inning. Catcher Mikayla Osterman (So., Sierra Vista, Ariz.) drew a two-out walk, then Lyndsey Peterson (OF, So., Cottonwood, Minn.) came up with a triple to plate Osterman. At the end of the play, an errant throw by an Arcadia player allowed Peterson to go home giving the Beavers a 2-0 lead.

The 2-0 score proved to be enough as Danielle Jecmen (P, Fr., Bloomingdale, Ill.) scattered three hits and four walks to earn her second complete game shutout of the season. Jecmen is now 4-1 this season.

BSU will look to remain perfect on day three of the Snowbird Softball Invitational Wednesday, as it will take on Gordon College and SUNYIT at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., respectively.
