Mercyhurst sweeps Bemidji State in softball doubleheader, 9-2 and 6-4

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Bemidji State University softball team suffered its first sweep of the season, losing both games of a doubleheader against Mercyhurst University Thursday, by scores of 9-2 and 6-4.

The first game saw the Beavers strike first. Kaitlyn Shea (OF, Fr., Woodbury, Minn.) led off the fourth inning with a walk and Mikayla Osterman (C, So., Sierra Vista, Ariz.) drove her in to give BSU a quick 1-0 lead. The Beavers added another run in the fifth as Jessica Yost (P, Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) doubled to score Alayna Krejci (3B, Fr., Wasau, Wis.).

BSU looked like it had the game in hand until the top of the sixth. Five of the Lakers’ first six batters reached base as Mercyhurst tagged BSU starter Danielle Jecmen (P, Fr., Bloomingdale, Ill.) with four earned runs to grab the lead, 4-2.

Mercyhurst would strike for five more runs in the top of the seventh. The Lakers posted just two hits in the frame, but were helped out by a pair of walks and four errors by Bemidji State to cruise to 9-2 victory.

Jecmen pitched all seven innings for Bemidji State and allowed nine runs (five earned) on 12 hits with four strikeouts. Her record drops to 4-2 this season.

In the second half of the doubleheader, the Beavers couldn’t top the Lakers, losing their fourth game of the season. Bemidji State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Shea plated Nicole Dupay (OF, Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) and Krejci with a triple and freshman Courtney O’Connor (C, Shakopee, Minn.) pushed Shea across with a single for the third run.

Unfortunately, the Lakers would score four runs in its half of the first and added two more in the fourth to put a six spot on the scoreboard. The Beavers would scratch across a run on a groundout by Dupay in the seventh, but ended up falling to Mercyhurst, 6-4.

Allison Roberts (P, Jr., Crystal, Minn.) took her first loss of the season in the circle making her record 3-1. Roberts pitched all six innings and posted seven strikeouts, but walked eight Laker batters.

The Beavers, now 10-4, have two more games left during their spring break trip. BSU will return to the diamond Friday as it takes on McKendree University and Dakota State University in Myrtle Beach, S.C. starting at 8:30 a.m.
