Bemidji State softball splits a pair of eight inning games in final day of spring trip

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Bemidji State University softball team split a pair of extra inning contests in the final day of its spring break excursion in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Friday. The Beavers defeated McKendree University, 8-7, before falling to Dakota State University, 2-1.

The first game of the day was a back and forth battle. BSU would strike first in the third inning on Cassie MacArthur’s (2B, Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) first home run of the season.

BSU clinging to a 1-0 lead after three innings, both teams would break out the bats in the fourth and fifth. BSU notched six of its 10 hits in the game during the fourth and fifth to plate a pair of runs in each stanza. McKendree would not go away though, as the Bearcats answered with one in the fourth and five in the fifth to tie the game 5-5 after five.

After scoreless sixth and seventh innings, the two squads would play an extra frame. The Bearcats would hit a two-run home run off of reliever Danielle Jecmen (P, Fr., Bloomingdale, Ill.) to put the pressure on BSU.

In the bottom half of the eighth, the Beavers answered the challenge as Alayna Krejci (3B, Fr., Wausau, Wis.) singled home Angie Roberts (OF, Fr., Andover, Minn.) and Chelsey Watson (1B, So., Clearwater, Minn.) to tie the game, 7-7. Kaitlyn Shea’s (OF, Fr., Woodbury, Minn.) single would score Nicole Dupay (OF, Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) to give BSU a walk off win, 8-7.

Jecmen got the win for the Beavers moving her record to 5-2 this season after four innings of relief. Jessica Yost (P, Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) started the game, going four inning, allowing three hits and one run, while striking out two.

Game two was a pitchers’ dual.

Dupay got BSU on the board early, hitting her second home run of the spring. The Trojans, however, would tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of third on an RBI groundout.

The starting pitchers dominated the duration of the game. Allison Roberts (P, Jr., Crystal, Minn.) kept the Trojans’ offense in check as only three runners reached second base. Unfortunately, one of those runners would score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to give Bemidji State a loss, 2-1.

Roberts was tagged with the loss despite pitching seven plus innings, scattering five hits and allowing two runs. She is now 3-2 in 2014.

Despite the split, the Beavers posted a 7-3 record on their spring trip improving to their nonconference record 11-5 overall.

With 11 wins through its first 16 games, Bemidji State has already accounted for more wins than any season since 2006 (17).

With the nonconference slate wrapped up, Bemidji State will now switch its attention to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Beavers will enjoy a week off before opening league play with a doubleheader against University of Minnesota Crookston, March 25. The games are set to begin 1 p.m. at the BSU Softball Field.
