Beavers fall in both games at Husky Dome

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Bemidji State University softball team fell in both games of its doubleheader with St. Cloud State University Saturday afternoon at the Husky Dome in St. Cloud, Minn. The Beavers (0-2, 0-0) fell in game one, 8-4, and fell in game two, 3-2, after a walk-off RBI single by the Huskies (5-1, 0-0 NSIC).

Game 1; Bemidji State 4, St. Cloud State 8
The Beavers got an early start to the game when junior Kelsey McAllister blasted a solo homerun in the top of the first. BSU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when sophomore Lexi Derrick hit an RBI single to score Makayla Pagel.

St. Cloud State responded however, with a run in the bottom of the second and six runs in the bottom of the third to take a 8-2 lead. The Huskies added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth while BSU added two runs off of RBIs from Megan Castor and Sami Dullum in the top of the seventh for a final score of 8-4.

McAllister led the Beavers by going 2-for-4 at the plate with a homerun, double and RBI while six other Beavers totaled a hit in the game. Junior Rochelle Koshalek earned the loss in the circle after going two innings and giving up six earned runs off of three hits. Sophomore Megan Pehrson came on in relief in the third inning to pitch four innings and allowed just two earned runs and tallied two strikeouts.

Game 2; Bemidji State 2, St. Cloud State 3
Game two would prove to be more of a pitcher’s duel between the two teams with St. Cloud State picking up the first two runs in the third and fourth innings. BSU would go scoreless throughout the first six innings but with two outs in seventh, senior Alexandra Ripka homered to center field to tie the game at two.

SCSU responded however, with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to earn the walk-off win and sweep over the Beavers.

Five Beavers totaled a hit in the game led by Ripka while freshman Stephi Dullum pitched 6.1 innings and allowed just three earned runs and two strikeouts in her first start for the green and white.

Bemidji State continues non-conference play next weekend when they travel to St. Paul, Minn., for the Dragon/Beaver Battle at the St. Paul Dome. BSU will play Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition in Concordia-St. Paul University, Southwest Minnesota State University and Minnesota State University, Moorhead.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
