Beavers drop two games on first day of Dragon/Beaver Battle

WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team fell to Concordia-St. Paul University and Southwest Minnesota State University on day one of the Dragon/Beaver Battle held at the West St. Paul Dome in West St. Paul, Minn. The Beavers (0-4, 0-0 NSIC) fell to the Golden Bears 11-3 in five innings to begin the day followed by a 5-3 loss to the Mustangs in game two.

Bemidji State held an early 3-1 lead over the Golden Bears after a three-run first inning for the Beavers. Junior Kelsey McAllister started the scoring with an RBI single followed by a two-RBI double from senior Alexandra Ripka.

After a pitching substitution by the Golden Bear in the second inning, sophomore Kali Kaestner came in to pitch four shutout innings. CSP scored runs in all five-innings including four in the second to secure the 11-3 run-rule victory.

Ripka led BSU with two RBI while junior Brooke Phillips went two-for-three at the plate. Junior Rochelle Koshalek earned the loss in the circle after pitching 1.1 innings and allowed four earned runs.

Bemidji State got off to a quick start in game two when Brooke Phillips drilled a lead-off homerun to start the game. However, the Beavers would be unable to score over the next three innings before RBI from Ripka and senior Kristin Monkman in the fifth and sixth innings.

Freshman Stephi Dullum held the Mustangs scoreless through the first three innings but earned the complete game loss after SMSU scored five runs through the final three innings.

Junior Makayla Pagel went three-for-three at the plate to lead the Beavers while Phillips followed by going two-for-four with a solo homerun.

The Beavers conclude play at the West St. Paul Dome tomorrow when they take on Minnesota State University, Moorhead and SMSU again at 9 and 11 a.m., respectively.
