BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Brie Groskreutz (Jr., OH/L, Reedsburg, Wis.) and Jamie MacQueen (So., F, St. Thomas, Ontario)have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after outstanding athletic performances during the week of Nov. 9-15. Groskreutz averaged 9.17 digs per set in the final two matches of the season, as the BSU volleyball team went 1-1. She had 55 total digs, including 38 in a 3-0 sweep of Upper Iowa University in the season finale. Her 38 digs established a BSU single-match record and was the largest dig total by an Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) player during the 2009 regular-season. She also added a .926 service percentage and a .897 serve-receive percentage. Her 38 digs Saturday bumped her season total to 534, which fell just two short of the program’s single-season dig record (since 1980). She now has 1,377 career digs, which is just nine shy of the school’s career dig record (since 1980), standing third. The announcement marks the first Beaver Pride award of the season for Groskreutz and the fifth time that a member of the BSU volleyball team has been honored during the 2009 campaign. She was also named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week Monday. MacQueen recorded the first multi-goal game of his career Sunday to lead the Bemidji State men’s ice hockey team to a 6-2 victory at the University of Minnesota. He scored what would be the eventual game-winning goal late in the second period and added an unassisted goal early in the third as a part of a three-goal, 88-second scoring burst by the Beavers to put the game out of reach for the Golden Gophers, to salvage a road series split and gain the program’s first ever win over Minnesota. This week’s award marks the first Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award of MacQueen’s career, while it marks the third occasion a BSU men’s hockey player has be selected for the honor this season. Groskreutz and the BSU volleyball team (11-20, 8-12 NSIC) finished with 11 wins, which is the most by a BSU squad since the 2003 team went 15-17. The Beavers also posted a 8-12 record in NSIC play, which stands as the highest conference win total since the 2002 team finished 8-10. They were ninth in the final NSIC standings after being placed 11th in the preseason coaches’ poll. BSU went 6-4 at home, which is its first winning home record since 2003. The Bemidji State men’s hockey team (8-1-1; 4-0-0) jumps back into College Hockey America play this weekend as it hosts the University of Alabama-Huntsville for the Chargers’ only trip to Bemidji this season. The series is set to begin Friday at 7:35 p.m. with the finale scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. opening face off Saturday. --bsu-- ![]() |
