Lisa Smith Named NSIC Offensive Player of the Week
BEMIDJI, MINN. -- Senior outside hitter Lisa Smith (Hastings, Minn.) has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for Oct. 27, announced yesterday by the league offices.

“ Lisa is doing very well in the second half of the season,” said head coach Kim Falkenhagen. “She is being real smart and more aggressive. She is playing the way that I always knew she could play.”

Smith was a big reason for BSU’s success last week. Bemidji State defeated Northern State and Winona
State and took No. 13 Concordia-St. Paul to five games on Friday. The 3-2 victory at Aberdeen, S.D., was the first since the 1997 season.

Smith notched two double-doubles in kills and digs. Against the Wolves, Smith dug 16 balls, complimenting 12 kills. The digs was the highest since she had 17 in the season opener against Concordia-Moorhead (8/29/03). She tied a career-high 24 kills and added 10 digs in the 3-2 loss to #13 Concordia-St. Paul on Friday. That was her fifth double-double of the season. She also hit .302 (24-8-53) against the Golden Bears. Against the Warriors, Smith recorded 16 kills to extend her double-digit kill streak at four matches.

On the week, Smith totaled 52 kills (3.71 kpg), hit .241 (52-19-137), totaled three service aces (0.21 sapg), 32 digs (2.29 dpg) and five blocks (0.36).

After being named to the 2002 All-NSIC First Team, Smith is third in kills per game (2.99) and fifth in digs per game (2.06) this season. She has led or tied for team-high kill honors six times and is tied with Heather Haugen in career double-doubles (10) among active players.

This award is Smith’s second in her career as she received co-player of the week honors, Oct. 21, 2002.

Facing a light week, Bemidji State travels to Minnesota-Crookston for a match against the Golden Eagles on Friday. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Beavers are fifth in the NSIC standings, a mere one-half game from third place.
