BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Courtney Bitter (So., S, Bemidji, Minn.) and Jody Henningson (So., WR, North Aurora, Ill.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after outstanding athletic performances during the week of Nov. 1-8.
Bitter posted 10.83 set assists, 3.25 digs, 1.83 kills and 0.42 blocks per set with a .155 attacking percentage in three matches last week, as the BSU volleyball team posted a 1-2 record. She also had her second triple-double of the season in a 1-3 loss to No. 14 Wayne State College (Nov. 7), contributing 42 assists, 16 digs and 10 kills while adding a .188 hitting percentage and three block assists. According the AVCA Division-II Stats Report (as of Oct. 27), Bitter’s triple-double is just the 21st in the nation this season and she still stands as the only NSIC student-athlete to claim the feat. Bitter had her third 50-plus assists match of the season with 51 in a 3-1 victory against St. Cloud State University (Nov. 3) and she posted a team-leading 12th double double against Augustana College(Nov. 6) with 37 assists and 14 digs. Bitter also added three service aces and a .927 serving percentage, with five blocks and 27.5 points over the week.
The announcement marks the third Beaver Pride award of the season for Bitter and the fourth time that a member of the BSU volleyball team has been honored during the 2009 campaign. Bitter also garnered the award one time in 2008-09 making Wednesday’s laurel the fourth of her collegiate career.
Henningson grabbed a career-high two touchdown receptions and helped lead the Bemidji State football team to a 35-20 victory over Concordia University-St. Paul in the 2009 season finale. In all, the sophomore wide out paced the team with four catches and 75 yards with both of his touchdowns catches coming from 30 yards or more.
Henningson finished the season second among the BSU receiving corps with five touchdowns, third on the team in receptions (19) and yards per catch (12.6), while he was fourth in receiving yards (240). He played in all 11 of the Beavers’ 2009 contests.
This week’s award marks the first Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award of Henningson’s career, while it is the eighth occasion a BSU football player has be selected for the honor in 2009.
Bitter and the BSU volleyball squad (10-19; 7-11 NSIC) return home for the final weekend of the 2009 campaign. Friday the team battles Winona State University at 7 p.m. and will host Upper Iowa University Saturday at 3 p.m. Both matches are set for the BSU Gymnasium.
The BSU football team wrapped up the 2009 campaign Nov. 7 with an 8-3 overall record and a 7-3 mark in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Beavers’ tied Augustana, St. Cloud State and Wayne State (Neb.) for third place in the league’s overall standings and also placed third in the NSIC North standings with a 4-2 mark in divisional play.
The 2009 campaign marks the fifth eight-win season in 14 years under head coach Jeff Tesch and the sixth in the program’s 84-year history. The team’s 4-2 record at Chet Anderson Stadium extends its streak of winning season at home to eight years.
