    The Bemidji State University volleyball team is coming off a tough stretch that saw it face three top 15 ranked teams last week. Though the Beavers came away with losses to No. 5 University of Minnesota Duluth, No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State University and No. 14 Minnesota State University, Mankato, they did show positive signs. BSU was able to take game victories from both SMSU and Minnesota State over the weekend marking the fourth and fifth game victories Coach Wayne Chadwick has picked up over ranked opponents in just over a year as the head coach at Bemidji State.
    Freshman walk-on Elissa Christensen (DS, Montevideo, Minn.) tied a school record with seven service aces in a four-game match while libero Laura Carlson (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) had a strong week defensively with 38 digs in two matches.
    BSU continues to start three freshman in Rachel Craig (MB, Wadena, Minn.), Kelsi Crawford (OH/DS, Wadena, Minn.) and Kelly Niles (OH, Grand Rapids, Minn.). The Beavers are led offensively by junior outside hitter Bethany Thompson (Owatonna, Minn.). Thompson comes into the weekend averaging 2.86 kills per game.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

    Augustana
    The Augustana College Vikings enter Friday’s match with an 9-4 (3-2 NSIC) record after picking up wins over University of Mary and Nothern State University last weekend. The Vikings picked up an upset over No. 10 Wayne State on Tuesday. Junior outside hitter Jordan Spatenka and sophomore middle blocker Holly Hafemeyer enter play as Augustana’s offensive leaders. Spatenka is averaging 3.13 kills per game and is hitting .305 while Hafemeyer comes in averaging 3.08 kills per game and hitting .298. The Vikings are hitting .223 as a team. Setter Dani Haley comes into the weekend averaging 11.11 assists per game.
    Defensively, Augustana has possessed a strong block this season with three players (Hafemeyer, Brooke Lewko and Mikayla Gallagher) averaging over one block per game. .

    Wayne State
    Wayne State College comes into the weekend ranked 10th in the nation after picking up wins against Northern State and U-Mary last weekend. Wayne State fell to Augustana on Tuesday The Wildcats are one of four NSIC teams ranked in the top 10 nationally. They currently boast a 10-4 (3-2 NSIC) mark. Tali Fredrickson and Cori Hobbs lead a Wayne State attack that is hitting .237 as a team. Fredrickson enters the weekend averaging 3.23 kills per game while Hobbs is averaging 3.07 kills per game. Setter Tatum Wroblewski comes into the weekend averaging 11.07 assists per game.
    Defensively, reigning NSIC Libero of the Year Leigh Connot leads the charge averaging 4.67 digs per game.

Series History
    Augustana
    The Vikings lead the all-time series 14-3 over the Beavers. BSU last defeated Augustana Oct. 2, 2009 in a five-game thriller at BSU Gymnasium. The Vikings defeated BSU in four games Oct. 1 last season.

    Wayne State
    Wayne State holds a commanding series lead of 2-22 over the Beavers. The Beavers have not won a match against the Wildcats since 2003, and are 0-11 since Scott Kneifl took the helm at Wayne State.  Last season the Wildcats upended the Beavers 3-0 Oct. 2.  

Freshman Watch
    Three Bemidji State freshman have started every match for the Beavers so far this year. Wadena-Deer Creek High School teammates Rachel Craig (MB) and Kelsi Crawford (OH/DS) have started all 14 matches along with Kelly Niles (OH, Grand Rapids, Minn.). In addition, Courtney Volkmann (S, Wadena, Minn.) and Elissa Christensen (DS, Montevideo, Minn.) have appeared in all 14 matches.

Miss Versatility
    Coach Wayne Chadwick knew he could count on Bethany Thompson (Jr., OH, Owatonna, Minn.) on the offensive end after her first two year’s but this season Thompson has picked up her defensive numbers. Thompson not only leads the team in kills (143) and service aces (16) but is also second on the team in digs (118).

Tough Stretch
    The Beavers just finished a stretch that saw them play ranked foe in (5) Minnesota Duluth, (14) Minnesota State and (7) Southwest Minnesota State. Augustana is the first non-ranked opponent BSU has played in over a week. However, the Vikings are coming off a big upset over (10) Wayne State on Tuesday.
